I've had a recurring throat problem for several years now. My throat will feel sore and painful...kind of the feeling you have before you get a cold...but much worse. My throat also feels like it is closing up and I get these big white spots on my tonsils and my tonsils turn red, get very veiny, and swell. I have been to three different doctors and all three said they had no idea what it was and they had never seen it before. I've had tests run...it's not strep, it's not tonsillitis, it's not tonsil stones....I'm getting frustrated. I'm so sick of this happening! It flares up once every few weeks and makes me miserable for days before it suddenly gets better. I've been told it was possible it was allergy related, but several different allergy meds have not helped me at all and the doctors have no clue what the problem is. Am I the only person who has had this problem? Does anyone know what it could be? Is there anything else I can do to help this besides getting my tonsils removed?

Please don't answer just to say 'I don't know...sorry' or anything like that. I need some real answers.

Thank you, brookethestylist! I think that is my only option. Did having your tonsils removed hurt badly? I've heard some horror stories about it.

I dealt with this "exact same problem" . Doctors didn't know what it was and I kept getting those spots and my throat hurt a lot. I finally found a doctor that agreed to remove my tonsils. I have not had any problems since then. Anitbiotics are the only other thing I tried and they helped a little but then it kept coming back. So you could see if the will give you some antibiotics. Otherwis, check with an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor to see if they will remove them for you. THe surgery is very routine now and to be able to live without dealing with everything I was dealing with back when I had them has been well worth getting the surgery.Hope this helps.

I would pay attention to the fact it comes and goes.
if it were something very bad, it would be there all the time.
It sounds like something is irritating it . It doesnt' have to be an infection to act like one.
Your body can get mixed up sometimes and any irritant, mold, allergy, deisel fuel exhaust etc. can cause the body to react as if it were an infection and you will get the same symptoms as an infection. That is what happens when your body is putting ot chemicals to fight a foreign body it feels has entered it.
I have even got what seems like sore throat /flu just from a loud noise going off near my ear. My throat swells, I feel awful and feel like I have a flu/cold coming on and then it goes away in a week.
I have realised that it is not an infection. It is not a sickness. I am ovfer sensitive and my body treats loud noises , exhaust fumes and certain chemical smells as if it were life and death.
I find the only way to stay well, is to avoid these things I know of and not to be around loud noises like machine shops where large pieces of metal can fall and catch me off guard.

I know what I have seems different than yours, but it may be very similar in cause. I am just finally figuring out that I am not getting infections every other week after ten years of this happening.
Now I take an allergy antihistimine pill as soon as I feel it coming on and it stops it quickly.

Sounds like he might be having an hypersensitivity. Have him maintain a magazine of the meals and drinks he consumes. From individual revel in, my sinuses will drain down my throat and make it crimson and really sore. It is problematic to devour or drink for the period of those instances. Warm tea or lemon juice may be very soothing for me. Cold beverages best purpose extra suffering. If your boyfriend isn't convinced with the solutions he has gotten from his care vendors, he will have to move someplace else for a moment opinion. Persistence will finally repay, so long as he maintains in brain that suffering and swelling don't seem to be typical and in a few circumstances might be signs of some thing very severe.
