I distinctly remember from pharmacology class that the grape fruit is unique from all other fruits in that it acts as a hepatic enzyme inducer, much like alcoholic drinks. It's such an enzyme inducer that there are certain medications that you can not take with grape fruit because it will decrease the potency of the medication.

Everything we eat is processed through the liver before it gets to the blood stream, so i guess the action (if there really is one) must lie somewhere near the liver.

As for your previous experience of tummy hardening, it was probably the swimming and not the grapefruit. Swimming is a very good form of exercise granted that you know how to swim properly. Doesn't cause joint injury, good cardiovascular work out and works all large muscle groups.

There was a study recently, where people who ate grapefruit with every meal lost more weight than people who did not. This also happened with people who drank grapefruit juice, but they did not lose as much weight as the people who ate the fruit.

There is no known reason why this works. My guess is that the grapefruit acts as a hunger suppressor, because it is so acidic.

There can be no harm from eating grapefruit, so eat up!

Grapefruit has alot of nutrients and antioxidants which are important. Eating alot of fruit by itself is also a good way to loose weight but will increase the body's acidity level, you would need to balance it out with other healthy foods that are more base such as chicken, fish, wheats, and salads. Along with the nutrients you get from fruits, wheat also treats your digestive tract well and gives you another glucose source.
