THE PRINCIPLE OF GLOBAL WARMING
In the simplest terms the earth retains more heat than it releases. This is caused by what we refer to as the Greenhouse Effect. The Greenhouse effect results from a build up of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. These gases interfere with the natural heat exchange between Earth and space. Without them heat can easily escape from Earth but with them there's a blanketing effect. This happens because the heat from the sun (solar radiation) is able to pass through the layer of GHGs without any problem but the heat from Earth (thermal radiation) has a longer wavelength and gets trapped by the layer of GHGs.

GHGs occur naturally, this keeps out planet at a habitable temperature. Our Moon is roughly the same distance from the Sun that we are but because it has no greenhouse gases or other atmosphere it experiences extreme temperature swings between day and night - some 250 degrees C (450 F).

NATURAL GLOBAL WARMING
The earth moves in relation to the sun - not so much in the way it goes round the sun but more in the angle at which it faces it (search Milankovitch Cycles). As a result some parts receive more intense sunlight than others. If the parts that primarily face the sun are land and ocean they absorb more heat from the sun than if it were snow and ice. Over very long periods of time this can cause the earth to warm.

The sun plays another important role in that the amount of energy it produces (called solar radiation) fluctuates. On a year by year bases the changes are tiny but over long periods of time they can be substantial.

MANMADE GLOBAL WARMING
Also called anthropogenic global warming. Since the onset of industrialisation some 200 years ago we have been adding to the amount of GHGs in the atmosphere, effectively causing the blanket of gases to thicken and retain more heat.

Some common GHGs are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These are by-products of our modern lifestyle and some causes include burning oil, coal and gas, deforestation and agricultural practices. Levels of all three have increased substantially in the last 200 years.

THE CURRENT CONCERN
In the past the world has warmed and cooled of it's own accord and during the half billion years we know about there's been four ice ages and four periods without any ice. These changes occur very, very slowly - at intervals of about 50 million years. What we're seeing now are temperatures rising much faster than has ever before been known and the concern is that we're causing it due to increased levels of GHGs.

There's a natural cycle (called the Carbon Cycle) which releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide every year; mainly from plants, soil and oceans. At the same time there's also a huge amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by plants, soil and the oceans. In nature this release and absorbtion is about the same - it's almost in equilibrium. The carbon cycle can absorb 3 or 4 billion tons more CO2 each year than it produces and if mankinD were only producing this much CO2 there would be little problem. But, in 2006 we produced 29 billion tons of it, much more than nature can handle.

Trevor's explanation is good. Here's a short one.

Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

The theory is that the increase in CO2, a byproduct of burning oil and gas, increases the amount of heat absorbed by the Earth and raises the temperature. That part is undeniable. Whether it changes the climate is speculation at this point. To say that it is leading to a catastrophe is beyond speculation and is better described as politicians trying to scare you. CO2 is a greenhouse gas because it lets light in that heats the earth. The heat cannot escape because CO2 blocks heat or infrared light. The most important greenhouse gas is water.
