The OT is based on the Torah, which is the Jewish religious book and the NT is added material based on the Christ cult. But both, essentially are, just books trying to explain the world around them with a God and give rules to live by that are supposedly God given. The OT God was vengeful because how else could people be made to believe then by fear? The NT God is forgiving because how else could a religion become infectious unless it gives everyone a chance to seek forgiveness for their ill deeds while seeking to not incur the wrath of the OT God?

In the old testament, God was portrayed as this distant (often scary) figure of authority.
He gave us commandments and we had to follow it...or else..! He was a God who demanded sacrificial lambs and who was known to often test the loyalty of his followers. He made Kings out of shepherd boys, and could just as easily take all that away.
He was, in a word - intimidating.

Then in the New Testament - came Jesus, who in turn reintroduced us to God as a father figure. This God was and is - a confidante, a friend, a constant companion through life. Somebody who we can talk to anytime, and yes, someone who'll always forgive us as long as we recognize our own wrong doings and repent for them.

I honestly believe that God has just evolved through the times. The times of the Old testament were more primitive, more barbaric - that's why the God of the old testament had to be this almost terrifying symbol, because that was the only way to get the respect of his people!

And today he's more accessible, more forgiving, more compassionate, because that's what the world needs the most in this day and age!

The O.T. was written to and for the early Jews. The laws were very strict. And they prophecied the coming of a Messiah.
Daniel 9;25.
When Jesus did arrive, he instituted the New covenant, that did away with the 600 laws of the Old Covenant. the New covenant had only two.
(Matthew 22:37-40) He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 The second, like it, is this, ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”

The New Testament is the second part of the Bible that records Jesus' life and times.

Jesus' Father in heaven, Jehovah God, is not vengeful, but did punish the Jews when they disobeyed. Much like any father with a wayward child.

Not quite true. God in the OT played favorites and punished people who didn't do what he said. But he never sent anyone to Hell. Hell is never mentioned until the NT, where God basically says, pray to Jesus and those who don't do what I say will be punished in this world AND go to Hell.

Jesus cleared this up quite nicely in a book called The Apocryphon of John. The christian church despises this book and did everything they could to destroy it. They failed. Jesus says that the god of the old testament is satan, not His Father. Be born of the Spirit of truth and She will confirm this for you.

It is the SAME GOD in both the Old and New Testaments. God is just and holy, while at the same time loving in both the OT and the NT. He is ALWAYS just, and he is ALWAYS loving, it's just that the sacrifice of His love appears in the New Testament very vividly.
