My soon to be 9 year old son will have to have dental surgery this Monday (to remove an extra tooth) and he will have to go under general anesthia, without the breathing tube. I am worried sick,,,,,I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and therefore I am a chronic worrier...I keep thinking "what if' he doesn't wake up? Please tell me of any experience you have had with your child going under anesthesia....Thank you sooooo much!

Well my kids have never been under anethesia but I was under anesthesia often when I was a kid because of fluid in the ear. They couldn't get it to go away so I wound up having tubes in my ears at an early age twice. I was also given twighlight sleep when I was 5 for a cardiac cath. You are asleep but it is a short acting anesthesia so you are not out long. Your son will be fine.

I work in a dental office (23 yrs) and I have never heard of a child of 9 going under for an extraction. I wouldn't worry at all but maybe you can ask the dentist if he has nitrous oxide(he should) this stuff will relax your son very very very much and he would be awake but very at ease.

When I was 9 years old, I broke my two front teeth roller skating. I had to have two root canals, and for nine year olds, they put you completely under general anethesia. Even back in 1979, I did fine. In 2007, they should have technology even better! He'll be fine! Good luck!

You need not even think about it, as its a very very minor operation.
I have undergone that operation and its just a routine operation ..
keep your cool ... and enjoy ice cream with your son ...
