Take it to the bank that issued it and ask them if it will clear.

Right above the memo line is the name of the bank from which the check was drawn off of. Call them. Give them the account number and the amount of the check. They will tell you if the funds are available. If there is a flag on the account that the owner reported his checkbook stolen, then you may have a problem.
When you take it to the bank to receive the cash, if they believe it is fraudulent, they will confiscate it. And you are the one left with a loss.

Best thing to do, if you don't no the person personally then don't except the check.Why take the chance of losing your money if it is a bad check.When you take it to your bank for deposit you'll not only lose the amount of the check your also be charged for a bounce check.It's not worth all
the trouble. I just went through the very same thing.I not only lost the $ 600. I was charged $ 25. by my own bank. I not only lost the $ 625.00 I had to come up with the same amount or all my checks would of bounced starting a chain reaction.

You can call the bank and give them the amount and ask if it is cashable. Pretty easy.
