Well, comparing a base model mustang to a mustang GT,
#1 Engine GT has a V8 powerplant
#2 Transmission, Upgraded Transmission to handle added power of the V8
#3 Rearend GT has the 8.8 instead of the 7.5, again its an upgrade to handle the added power of the V8
#4 Suspension, V8's are heavier and require different spring ratings
#5 Brakes, GT's require more stopping ability since the more powerful V8 will move the car quicker and faster
#6 exhaust, V8 gets a dual exhaust V6 has a single exhaust.
#7 Body parts, the GT gets side skirts and diferent front and rear bumpers, depending on year it might also upgrade the hood to one with a scoop.
#8 different dash instruments the GT gets a higher MPH readout on the speedo
#9 Body bracing GT's have more bracing throughout the cars structure to handle the added power of the V8 and the list still has more little things, like Fog lights GT's have them base Stangs don't

First off, it REALLY depends on the year. The GT model usually has a V8 motor, instead of the V6, which means that the GT has more horsepower. Besides the motor, it could mean the difference between interior stying (leather, heads up display, technology). Nowadays, the Mustang has many different models and upgrades. You're best bet would be to go to www.ford.com to see a detailed description of each model out.

Mainly the engine.
The Mustang is a V6 whereas the GT is a V8.
Just about everything else can be the same with upgrades except the exhaust. Mustang is single and the GT is dual.

Im not gunna repeat what everyone just said, because those are the main reasons, but if you are going to get a stang, get the V8, because its not even worth it to get the V6 because they are less reliable and dont go as fast

the mustang is completely pointless. the gt is the start of the real mustangs. the v6 mustang is a piece of crap. get a cobra or shelby.
