Pound for pound The American Staffordshire Terrier aka Pit Bull is the strongest dog, but they are not fighters like everyone thinks. Any dog can be a vicious fighting machine, its what the owners make of them. They are very trainable and make great pets and are just as loving and wonderful as a Lab. As for German Shepards they are brilliant dogs but are not for everyone. They are very energetic and very intelligent which means they need to be trained. They are dogs that needs jobs they have to have an owner that is willing to train them and play with them and a lot of people dont realize that and they wind up being very destructive because of their boredom. I dont believe they are the smartest dogs, I actually believe the Border Collie is the smartest breed but they are up there right along with Poodles. I do hope however that you are not considering purchasing a dog just because of its strength

The Rottweiler has the strongest bite power, if that's what your asking about. I have owned Pit Bulls, Rottis and one GSD in my whole life, and the Pits are by far the smartest. The GSD was pretty smart, but often just did his own thing and refused to obey commands.
Pit Bulls have a higher pain tollerance then Shepherds and Rotti's together, and therefore will fight to the death if they have to.
Check out this video, it's about "Canine Bite Power" and will prove my point.

EDIT: The American Staffordshire Terrier is not a Pit Bull. It's an Am Staff. The American Pit Bull Terrier is the only kind of dog that is truely a "Pit Bull."

Pound for pound, pits are generally strongest in terms of things like weight pulling, but as to jaw strength, no one really knows. I would think that the jaw strength would be abouth the same.
As for the smartest, I believe it depends on the indivdual dog. All 3 of these breeds are very smart. All 3 can excell at sports like schutzhund which requires obedience, patience, determination and good listening skills.
I have never had a pure bred Rottie or GSD, but my APBT amazes me with her intellegence. She actually plans things out to get her way. For example, when I give my dogs treats, my pit will start barking, so the other dogs will drop their treats and run to the door, thinking we have a visitor, and my pit will steal the treats that they dropped. My vet also has a pit and it has pushed a chair from the table to the sink to it can sit on the chair while it licks the dishes. I think thats why a lot of people get frustrated and give their pits away, because they can outsmart you if you let them.
Pits and Rotts are also great police dogs btw.
~to the second poster~ what you said is very ignorant. Pit bulls will let go when properly trained and told to do so. In the middle of tug o war I can tell my pit to "drop it" and she will do so immediately. If they wouldn't let go when biting then they would never be any good at schutzhund, which they definitely are. Also, my little Pekingese would peel a coconut for fun. Dogs love to chew on things. It's a well known fact. The pit was just chewing on the coconut.

Pit bulls i believe have the strongest bite. I heard on the discovery channel that they can pull with 48x their body weight. Brute strength would probably go to the rott or shepard. Shepards are smarter than the other two and have a better sense of smell. You gotta love pit bulls, I just heard on the news about a "family" pet pit bull just attacked the child in the home. I know, I know, its hard to belive but after attacking another dog, and killing the family cat a week before this incident, I don't know how anyone could have seen it coming.

PIT BULLS ARE NOT DANGEROUS UNLESS THEY'RE TRAINED TO FIGHT. Usually they are really great pets but sometimes they do not like other animals. My Son has one that was a stray that weighs about 100 pounds and is a big sweetheart. A friend has one that is about 80 pounds, gets along great with my dog, and was also a stray. Shepard's are probably the easiest to train and the smartest of the three breeds you mentioned. Rotties are good all around dogs with a true love for their family, and very protective. They're also used for Police Dogs like the Shepard's are.

It`s "gameness" and it is not the willingness to complete a task and not give up. It is strictly relates to a fighting dog that will not fail to make a scratch, turn or quit. Apbt and AST are not the same. There is no gameness in the AST. They are for pet and show. 100 and 80 lb. dogs are not Apbt`s. They may have Apbt blood but it is either mixed with American Bulldog or Mastiff.
A game dog will usually not give up a hold unless it is to gain a better one. For what they were bred for , the game APBT is the ultimate dog and no other breed comes close. As for strength, pound for pound the Apbt is the strongest dog on the planet and one of the "smartest "as well . Also, APBT`s ARE NOT trained to fight. A dog is tested for gameness and if the dog shows to be game, then the dog may be matched to determine that gameness is there. Either a dog is game or not, there is no in between. Using mutts and non game APBT`s as "bait dogs" is only done by amateurs and morons. There is no need for it, you roll a young dog with a more experienced dog to get an evaluation and go from there. To quell another myth, on the high level, very few matches are to the death. Most always a dog is picked up before serious damage is done.

The smartest dogs are border collies & 2nd are poodles. Rotts, shepards & pits are strong dogs & all of them are very trainable. Even thought there are alot of old wives tales about pits, rotts have stronger jaws mainly due to their size. Shepards are lower to the ground & are working dogs so their job is whatever they've been trained to do. I've been around all of these types of dogs & not to be rude to shepard owners but they don't seem to feel too much pain so they get hurt easier. For example, a local car repair place has 2 shepards for security. They put in an electric underground fence & the dogs sat near the fence getting zapped until the electrodes burned into their necks. To me, that's not too bright but they weren't trained to fear that so they didn't. Pits & rotts seem to think about things before they do them & they are strong!!
I do hope you're not checking into these breeds for anything more than doing your research before getting one & not for fighting.

That's the very question that began the "Pit fights" and each of those breeds was combined to get range, height (not to leggy and tall), agility, (in and out striking ability) and lethal jaw pressure.Braininess is subject to the ancestors in each breed. They all have common background and each was refined from their common ancestors for a specific trait. The worst combined traits created the "Pit Bull" He is a war machine. They are banned from all horse show grounds by the way- They have attacked horses being ridden and held on to the muzzle until the horse collapses.Truth.

I preffer Rotts but I am a little bias. Just to let you know that Rotts have also been used as police dogs and it is being done more and more. We used to raise Rotts and had officers come buy them to be their partner. They are very intellegent dogs although a lot of people just want them to be mean and dont try to do anything else with them. It is all on how you raise the dog on how mean or how smart they are. My neighbors Rotts dad has a full size truck tire that he throws around for a toy! Now that's a site!

I would think that Pits are stronger and German Shepherds are smarter. Obviously dogs aren't born smart and need a lot of training. I hope you don't plan to get a certain breed just because he is stronger!
