Personally, I would choose a Canon for a "point n shoot" and a Canon or Nikon for a DSLR.

As far as Olympus, I haven't owned one, but reviews on their cameras have been mixed. I would definitely read all the reviews you can find on the specific model you are looking at before purchasing one.

Ricoh seems a bit overpriced to me, but my experience with a Ricoh camera has been excellent. I bought a Ricoh RDC-7 in April 2001, at that time it was way ahead of it's time, and 6 years later, I still use it, and have taken at least 60,000 photo's on it in that time. Again, read the reviews before you purchase a specific model.

I own three different Olympus cameras, both 35mm and digital. All three still work perfectly.

I want a camera that works, not one that I have to worry about the warrantee.

While I've also owned a re-branded Ricoh 35mm SLR, I found it didn't hold up after the fifth year I used it. Warranties don't last that long.

Anyway, do consider the Olympus brand first.

I used to work in Ritz Camera. Ricoh had the better warranty and I was impressed with the commitment to quality they had. Their cameras were built stronger and didn't rely on as many plastic parts. I bought an Olympus digital camera when digital cameras first came out and while it took nice pictures, it was almost impossible to shoot 5 pictures before needing a battery change! It was ridiculous! I now have Canon digital cameras and highly recommend them. They seem to have excellent image quality even in lower light and are easy on the batteries.

But as far as Ricoh vs. Olympus, compare warranties.

Good luck!
