If you believe in one God (the same one Christians worship, by the way. "Allah" just means "God" in Arabic!) and you believe that Mohamed was a prophet of God, and if you feel prepared to uphold the pillars of Islam and follow the various rules (like not drinking alcohol, not eating pork, not having sex outside marriage), then go for it.

So many Americans misinterpret the religion so completely. If you believe, then convert. It's as simple as that.

That is your decision, but this decision should be made after studying the religion, its doctrines and history. Never join any religion without knowing anything about it. You should talk to believers as well as those who have left the religion, so that you will understand both sides of what it means to be a member of the religion. Read not only its scriptures, but other books about the religion, both pro and con. And it is wise to study many religions to have a more rounded understanding and to see their similarities and their differences. You may be surprised to discover that there are more similarities than differences among the various religions.

If you are trying to fill a void in your life, welcome to human nature, as the Lord gave us a void in our life, so we would search for truth. And Truth is God/Jesus. The Lord is at your heart's door knocking and wanting you to open up your heart to Him so He can have a relationship with you and give you His Holy Spirit to live in you. Then and only then will you come to know Jesus and love Him as your only Master of your life with NO need to search any further. With any other god in your life, your void will never be filled and you will not have the Joy and Peace The Lord promises to those who choose to follow Him. And you will not be with The Lord in Heaven for eternity. So, do what you want, it is your choice, but do consider the consequences before deciding. Just remember, God's Word clearly states that Jesus IS the WAY, the truth and the light. God be with you in your decision.

Ted,
Why would you choose to "convert" to any religion, created by man, when you could choose to follow the teachings and instructions (Torah) of the One living God, who created you, sustains you, and has given you the instructions on how to have an intimate, fulfilling, blessed relationship with Him?

Do you believe in Islam?

As long as you are unsure, don't. Convert only when you are sure and won't feel the need to seek endorsement from others.

If and only if:
- you feel the presence of God (by whatever name you call Him) in your life; AND
- you are seeking to be closer to Him and you realise that you cannot find what you need in other religions; AND
- you are willing to take responsibility for your own faith; a true Muslim does not blindly follow others, as each is solely responsible for his own faith and actions; AND
- you recognise that most 'adherents' of most religions are less knowledgeable about their own faith than they believe themselves to be, let alone of others - and you resolve to learn more about your own and others; AND
- you recognise that, as with other religions, there is a lot of cultural baggage that has nothing essential to do with the religion itself which is lumped into what people think of as "Islam", and you resolve to make an effort to live your faith rather than a specific culture that interprets it; AND
- you are willing to live past the prejudice and media-whipped hysteria so prevalent in the Western world today; AND
- you are willing to make a sincere and committed effort to live the faith in all aspects of your life; THEN....

Welcome to Islam, brother!

I am an American (Caucasian) man, 45 years old, who reverted to Islam nearly ten years ago, after being a (Jesuit) Catholic for my entire adult life prior to that (raised as a Southern Baptist until 16, but I digress). I am still learning more about Islam and how to live it every day; it's one of those experiences where you can understand the "basics" in ten words or less but spend the rest of your life figuring out how to apply them. For anybody who is serious about religion, who believes that there is a Creator Who is larger than we can understand, that is a positive, not a negative.

One final note: After I'd reverted, I studied under a very good teacher for several months, learning the Qur'an and the Hadith. He had one bit of advice that has helped me deal with both those both inside and out of the faith who are (in my opinion) not treating it or its believers properly. "Islam is unique in that there is only one leap of faith required; after that, *everything* that is authentically part of Islam can be explained logically, rigorously and explicitly in terms of what you have already accepted. Otherwise, it is an invention." The one leap of faith he mentioned is the "shahadah", or statement of faith; interpreted in English as "I testify that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad was the last Messenger of Allah." Everything else - EVERYTHING else - has to be built (with solid intermediary concepts as needed) on top of that foundation.

May Allah guide you on your journey, as to Him we shall all return.

Ask Allah to make your bald spot spontaneously grow back in without Rogaine, Propecia or transplants. If he does, convert.

Did you know that after meeting phoney psychic James Van Praagh, Danson was so impressed that he decided to play Van Praagh in the television miniseries Living with the Dead which I just rated "Hated It" on Netflix? Danson has praised Van Praagh for re-connecting him with his dead father, and has said of communication with the dead, "I think 50, 100, 200 years from now it will be Common Sense 101. It will be so mundane". Yes, Teddy is a dummy.

it's your choice. why would you ask it on Yahoo when you know you'll get mixed answers, some might be biased, some all for it. it's really up to you, whatever makes you feel comfortable, whatever makes you feel like a better human. good luck on your decision.
