Check out the Canon PowerShot A630. 8 mp and 4x optical zoom. I saw it in Circuit City's ad this past Sunday for $229.99.
Check out it's specs and review. I love the vari-angle screen. http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a630_a640-review/index.shtml

If you're going up to $300, look at a Canon Powershot A630. My brother has had his for about a year and it's a very nice camera. You can get it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $212. Buy a 1 or 2 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III. These cards cost from about $25-45 at B&H and several other outlets.

I think the COOLEST small camera is the Canon Powershot SD700-IS and it is JUST under $300. It comes with a very small card, but you will need a decent memory card, as mentioned above. I bought one for my daughter's birthday and have been playing around with it for a couple of days until her birthday gets here. I was going to get this model for myself, but it was simply sold out everywhere for a couple of months when I was ready to buy. Maybe I should have waited...
It costs $300, has good zoom range and the image stabilization to go with it. It's SMALL and good looking. Great LCD and it still has an optical viewfinder.

(In Europe, this same camera is known as the IXUS 800 IS, so don't let the label on the camera confuse you. This is NOT the SD800-IS, which is known in Europe as the IXUS 850 IS.)

Last year I was looking for a camera around the $300 range and after careful review I went with a 6MP Panasonic DMC-FZ7 and I am highly impressed and satisfied with this camera. The new 7.2MP FZ8 has higher image quality and more features and is still under $300 at newegg.

You can ask 100 people that question and get 100 different answers.
After much research, I found that the Canon Powershot SD550 was the camera that would give me the most bang for the buck. I haven't been disappointed.
Check out the reviews and decide for yourself:

I would consider the Canon Powershot A710 IS at $275.
It's an excellent camera, and a great buy.

Canon Powershot SD750
or
Canon Powershot SD1000
(seem very similar)
OR for a little more than $300:
Canon Powershot SD800 IS
add image stabilization (good idea)

A really good idea for any digital camera you buy is a da' products LCD protector to prevent cracking your camera's screen (i have suffered that loss before).

depends on what you are going to use it for. I like Canons, they're really well made, and have great features. They also have a trade in program so you can trade in your old or broken Canon camera towards a new Canon.

Yeah I had taken a look at the Z740 already, I was going to get that if I had a lack of funds.
And there are a lot of Cameras on that second link. I was hoping for specifics.

I use an Olympus camera, and the picture quality is amazing. I would take a look at them as well.

I wouldn't buy anything but a Canon. Get the one that fits your budget.
I started with out with Pentax and Canon 35 mm cameras, and went digital with the original digital Elf, and this month I'm picking up an EOS 20D.
Their cameras have always performed flawlessly, the picture quality is great. Color balance is spot on, and the optics are extremely good.
The software they provide interlaces with other aps seemlessly.
The reliability of their all their products (camaras, printers) and their customer support was rated higher than any other company in a recent computer magazine (PC MAG, PC WORLD, if your interested I can check).
I have a Canon s9000 printer (large format) as well.
I've been a 35 mm photographer since 1968. I also have a very large antique camera collection (over 500 cameras dating back to the early daguerreotype cameras).
Just my opinion, but you can't go wrong with these guys. See which of the models Canon makes is in your budget, and google the reviews between models.
Make sure the model you pick meets your needs and handle one in a real store. Ergonomics play an important part in choice. You want to be able to comfortably use the device.
Playing "devil's advocate" I have to be fair and also say that my brother is a photographer by occupation for a large company. He uses Canon (company owned, but chosen by him) for all his professional work, but an Olympus is what he owns personally. He prefers the ergonomics of the Olympus but the imagery of the Canon.
My 2 cents anyway..........

Muchos Dankes pimps.
The largest factor for me aside from price and picture quality, is ZOOOM. The one Olympus camera I've used is a total piece of junk (then again it is from like 2002). I'll take a look see into them anyhow, and same with Cannon.
Has anybody heard anything decent about the Sony DSC M1?

I use the Fuji 5000 and I think that it is a good basic camera. Even my wife likes it.
My dad has the Canon S2 IS and loves it, I don't like the control layout, but it is a matter of personal style.

When you start leaning on ZOOM as a key element in your choice, compare apples with apples.
You have OPTICAL ZOOM, and DIGITAL ZOOM. There is a HUGE difference, don't just go by how many X's are pasted on the side of the camera....
Optical zoom is the real deal. The lenses are doing the work! The telescopic effect is done by the lense BEFORE the picture is taken. If image quaility is an issue, any telephoto shot you take will be better if it was done via optical zoom.
Digital zoom is no big deal.... you could obtain that in PhotoShop..........I don't even use the digital zoom.

That is true digital zoom isn't that big of a deal and if ur not printing a lot of pic then super high megapixels are not that big of a deal either. Make sure u get a red eye reduction camera.
This is a zoom.

You mean if you're not printing or viewing LARGE pictures, not a lot of pictures....
I have an old 2.1 megapixel cameras. Great colors and clarity, UNTIL you try to squeeze an 8 x 10 out of it.

I would definitely recommend one of those Canon Digital Elphs. Especially since the prices have dropped...I remember a few months ago they were in the $300-$350 range (some palces might still have it at that) but it seems you can find them from $250-$300.
I would also suggest looking at one of the Casio models. I think it might be the Z57 or Z55. The new S500's have also dropped down to $300 at some places. That thing is so freaking thin and small. I was thinking of getting it but I'm not sure I would want my Digital Camera that thin. It does look nice though.
