I have layered hair, and I straighten it daily because it has a really nasty "some wave some not" look to it otherwise. I straighten it, then an hour later the top layers start to go inwards and it gets super-poofy. I ask my hairdresser to use those shears thin it out, but it always seems to come back after a few days. I have tried conditioners up to wazoo, but nothing seems to work. What should I do? (Also, if anyone knows tips to make my hair hold a curl, please tell me!)

She probably needs to take a razor to your head to thin your hair, and probably needs to do it a lot and all over! No, I don't mean shave your head either!! It is just like a thinning shears but it works a little better (at least I think that it does). As for getting your hair to hold a curl, first of all you need to make sure that your hair is completely dry before you try to curl it, or straighten it because if it isn't you can really damage your hair that way. 2nd, try to use a firm hold gel in your hair before you dry it, and use a firm hold hairspray when you have finished the style, another tip is when you have curled your hair, or straightened your hair, DON'T TOUCH IT UNTIL IT HAS COOLED OFF. Just leave all of them sit until you are completely done with your hair because the curl will stay better if you let it cool before touching it. Try spraying it with hairspray after it has cooled and before you touch it. Hope I helped.

I am so glad to see there are others that have the same issues with having REALLY thick hair!

Here is what my stylist does she cuts it with a hot razor. having just recently cut all of my hair off this item is new to me. It gives the whole style that look of those with normal hair.

I always had better luck of it holding a curl if I let it dry naturally - allowing the curl that I did have naturally to help with the curl I was putting in. I could get some long lasting and pretty tight curls with whatever I was using.

Also, when my hair was long I was using a serum - BioSilk - I love that product line so much for my thick, wavy in spots yet straighter in others, hair. I have my kids using it as well, my son is growing out his hair and he has the same hair. I will straighten his hair with a ceramic straightener - works fine.

Remember that you have to hold the straightener at a certain angle in order to get it flat to your head. then just bend it a bit to get the ends a little curl or bend.

you know what straightening doesnt work and thats probably the reason why your hair has that 'nasty' look to it ...and as for the poofiness, you can use almond oil b4 having a bath, and then wash it out thouroughly with a CONDITIONER and not a shampoo, as shampoos have the same chemicals that are present in laundry detergents(sulfates).so get a good conditioner..john frieda ones are sorta expensive, but worth the money.if you have naturally wavy hair, then the curls will come to you eventually.you can use curl defining gel or mousse if you want but again just use john friedas, as the other ones make your hair sticky and tangled..its best if you dont use any chemicals though

Stop straightining your hair! Lol. My hairs the same. Incredibly thick, and has a natural curl to it. Some days it curls like normal hair, and sometimes it has this off weird "Messy kick" of a curl lol. My advice? Let the curls be curls. Use the scrunch technique. When your hair is damp? shake your hands through your hair. You know, so you can see the curls and what not. Shake your head around, let in unstraighten. Then saturate your hair in hairspray. NOT GET! Once you do that, clench your fist with hair in your hands. Do this allover your head from front to back. Shake your head again, and do it once more. That usualy can do the trick. I also like to use a curl inhancer, I favore Got2B curls up. But about a table spoon in your hand, and repeat what you did with the hairspray. Scrunch your hair, shake it, do what you got to do. Last, use a quarter inch curling iron to do spiral surls off your face. I spray the hair thats in the curling iron before I let if out, gives it more "stick" After you do that along your face, shake it out a little more. You'll have beautifully thick hair. Whats also nice, is you know those crazy directions your hair seems to want to go while its drying? That only makes this hair style look more glamerous. :) This is usualy how mine turns out when I do it that way

Hope this helped you, lemme know if it did! :)

YOU HAVE TO ---HAVE TO ---HAVE TO!!! use a product on your hair FIRST--to help it stay straight.
You can't just straighten with nothing on it.

You NEED to QUIT getting it thinned.
Curly hair--if it is thinned to close to the scalp--will curl WORSE when you work with it!
DO NOT get it thinned every time you go the stylist.
