There was one. I was watching the history channel and they interviewed the only Kamikaze to return. The reason was his plane malfunctioned and he had to land in the ocean before he reached his target.
He actually lived in shame for many years for failing to carry out his mission.

Most Kamikaze pilots did not survive the war. The mission was to die for the emperor. But they were also not stupid, if they could not find a target they would survive the mission by returning to base to fly another mission.

Those that went on a mission did not survive. But those who were just training for a mission did survive. This does not though allow historians to call them kamikaze, though.

Kamikazes sometimes survived the crashes and the ships ,usually of the US, would try to rescue the pilots out of the water but they would actually carry a granade with them and blow themselves up before they could be rescued.

Kamikazes were military aviators in Japan who destroyed the naval vessels of the Allies during World War I even though it meant commiting suicide, if they didn't carry out their missions, which involves suicide, they were not kamikazes anymore due to the fact that they were still alive.

If they were able to carry out their mission, then they didn't survive.
The Kamikaze pilot came in high, and dove down. Either they hit their target and died, or they missed and hit the water, yet still they would die.
Of course, some were not able to commence their missions due to airplane malfunctions, so they would wait until the next mission.

"were the kamikaze's the splendid fighter pilots that ever lived?" With all due recognize, and trust the very truth I proceed to be in awe of every person with guts adequate to placed their existence on the line for his or her beliefs despite the indisputable fact that "splendid fighter pilot" has an major criteria. Survivability. certain many kamikazi pilots in case you want to look at in basic terms stats had a 100% kill ratio. genuine that could qualify as 'ideal' in that regard unarguably. yet, no longer all kamikazi pilots hit their mark with the bravery and training and petrol and production of that airplane reaching 0 result. also save in options because the kamikazi are a strictly offensive weapon, the popular purpose being a bomber - it truly is the U. S. pilots attending to understand the paintings of their commerce as adversarial to a pilot on a one way challenge. Which makes the further helpful Air rigidity? A fighter pilot has to maintain sufficent target to effectively options you, shoot a much off target it truly is pulling each manouver the different pilots knows - at the same time as a kamikazi pilot's target is way slower shifting and equates to hitting the wide fringe of a barn. courageous and selfless definately and unaguably... ideal ideal 'fighter pilot' they do arise lacking.

Kamikaze pilots are basically suicide bombers who crash their planes onto American ships. Their survival rate is almost zero, as they expected to die to carry out their suicide missions.
