First...parvo is a very contagious, airborne virus that can be deadly to puppies. It is VERY hard to contain, so I would not hold fault with the Humane Society. Second...You are AWESOME!!!! For getting your puppy from them in the first place, and for being a responsible, loving new owner. MOST would just take it back and give up on it..Please follow the Vets advice very closely, and if you have ANY fears that your puppy is not O.K. call the Vet or take the puppy in. If he is responding to treatment, (and it sounds like he is) he should be starting to get better any time now. The bleach and water is the only thing I know of that kills the virus, so you are also doing GREAT with that. Labs are SO very loving and sweet dogs, and I'm sure he will pay back your kindness by giving you LOTS of love, and LOTS of fun times. Hang in there...Good luck..and once again..You sound like the best new owner any puppy could hope for, and you are WONDERFUL !!!! Thank-You !!

Just try to make sure the pup drinks Use a syringe and force it a little if you have to, it is very important he stays hydrated. Give him pedialyte. If you can get get him to eat that would be good too. I used a orphaned puppy formula for a dachshund pup (3lbs) I saved from parvo and fed it to him in a syringe. This is the formula I fed in small amounts, I cup homogenized milk, 3 egg yolks, 1tbsp corn oil and 1 dropper of liquid baby vitamins. It was quite gratifying when the pup finally started responding, I think it took 4 to 5 days, it was a few years ago. There is only a 50/50 survival rate so it all depends on how soon the treatment was started.
I hope it all works out and good luck!!!

It will take probably a week before he starts perking up & eating better. It's best if he doesn't eat too much until his stomach settles down. Be sure he's getting plenty of water so he doesn't dehydrate. This is a pretty nasty disease & it takes a while for dogs to bounce back. He'll be weak & sleep alot while his body fights back. Don't give up on him. Keep up with the treatments & be alert for any drastic changes. You're doing all you can to bring him through this.
When you are able, I'd find out why the humane society didn't give him the shots to prevent this from happening. Pups usually get their first set at about 6 weeks old so he should have been protected.
Good luck & keep the faith.

I understand how you feel, I have been through the parvo treatment twice. My vet told me to get gatoraide or pedialite and give it to them by dropper. It gives them electrolites they need even if they don't want to. I did that with 2 of my dogs. Also a little water every few hous in a dropper will help so puppy overcomes the dehydration. I'm pretty sure they have your puppy on meds that help cease the vomitting. It took about a week or so of treatments. Ask you vet about what I said about the water, pedialite and gatoraide. The gatoraide also give the puppy something in its stomach. I treated both of my dogs outpatient and I was administering their nightly shot and vomit meds. I brought my dog to the vet everyday for I V treatment that they needed. Both of my dogs are alive and well today.

You're right to be disinfecting everything with bleach. The bleach has to be left on all surfaces for 20 minutes before you rinse it off to disinfect it - this virus is extremely hardy.

The fact that your poor puppy is no longer vomiting and the diarrhea has stopped is a great sign. I would think it was caught in time. If that's the case, your puppy should recover with no more complications. It's just going to take him time to fully recover and become healthy.

Talk to your vet to make sure there's nothing extra you should be doing for him. He's been very ill and in pain, so it's going to take him time to start eating normally. Try adding a few tidbits to his dry puppy food to tempt his appetite - things like boiled chicken, perhaps pour a bit of no-salt chicken broth on his food. Because he's been so sick, I don't want to suggest adding anything else - again, ask your vet what he'd suggest.

Hope your puppy will be back to normal soon!

Oh, poor baby! If the vomiting and the diarrhea have stopped and he's eating anything, those are good signs. Try giving him people food, like cooked chicken or beef, even lunch meats. There's usually more salt in people food and that will encourage him to drink water. ou might also try some puppy milk replacement, like Just Born. (Wal-Mart carries it if everything else is closed). Don't give him milk, though, it causes diarrhea.

Best of luck to you both. I'm keeping a good thought for you.

Don't know about suing the USHS but you should definitely call them and tell them their puppies have been exposed to parvo.

Gore's answer was rude and crude, but Parvo is a tough one. Many dogs do die from it. I had a puppy get it once and she did live, after 10 days of intensive care and I.V.'s at the vet. I would say about two weeks to recover if treatment does work. Keep in constant contact with the vet as it can worsen very rapidly to the point of no recovery. I wish you luck and be sure to vaccinate when he is recovered!

OMG find another vet!! If it's really parvo, it's not possible to treat it as an outpatient, it needs IV fluids!!! And if you are able to treat it at home, it ain't parvo... coronavirus maybe, but not parvo. And no vaccine is 100%, the dog could have been harboring something but showing no signs of illness at the humane society... however, you should DEFINITELY contact the humane society so that they know to quarantine and watch any animals that may have had contact with yours. Good luck!

This is why puppies do not belong in shelters! Way to much exposure. It is much better to get a puppy from the HOME it was born in.

Good luck with the Parvo. If you think you might want another puppy you should wait until all the germs are gone. So try not to infect everything, in case your baby doesn't make it

My newest puppy Calla Doo got parvo back in October I went with the home management. I took her about a month and a half to get back on dog food completely. Till then i just made some rice with chicken or beef broth. She also loves ice cubes so i always made sure she had ice cubes b/c she wouldn't drink water but would chew up the ice cubes. You MUST keep them hydrated how ever it takes. Calla also liked Pedialyte pops and it has electrolytes in it so will keep him hydrated better than water alone. Be strong its hard to see them hurting but it sound like you know what your doing and you have it under control. He will make it as long as you are confident in yourself and your vet.
