usually caused by diabetes. elevated sugars over time can cause damage to nerve cells. The painful symptoms can sometimes be improved with gabapentin, a prescription drug. There is no way to reverse the damage, but controlling blood sugars very aggressively may help to slow the progression of the neuropathy.

Half of people with peripheral neuropathy have diabetes. Some types of peripheral neuropathy are more likely to be related to diabetes than others. In type 2 diabetes, it is not rare for people to have neuropathy before they are diagnosed with diabetes (because the diabetes is not causing other symptoms).

My daughter was diagnosed with PN at one point, and it was by a Neurologist. Her tests came back as having nerve damage, but no idea why. She wasn't diabetic, either and was only 16 at the time. Her ankle and foot pain was so horrible that she could barely walk. She ended up taking Lyrica for a couple of months and it seemed to help a bit, and then all the pain went away. It's been one year and some of the pain is coming back. Lyrica is a presciption pill. Your poor grandma must be in alot of pain. Blessings to her!!! My advice to your grandma is just to be stronger than the pain ... some days may be better than others, so take advantage of those times. Good Luck!

My grandma has neuropathy... she is in pain 24/7 and is basically nocturnal... We live in Oklahoma and we went to a specialist in Penn. that did some sort of Ultrasound type therapy on her.. it help her for the first 6 or 7 months.. her pain was reduced and she could feel stuff with her feet... but now its just gone back to what it was before.
She can be bleeding profusely from her foot and not even know...
Theres not really anything that can be done... I mean pain pills is the only thing...
She describes it to me as have numb feet 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Depends what the cause is. Neuropathy is secondary to another medical condition.
It can be caused by a lack of certain minerals due to diet or malabsorption. I had neuropathy in my hands due to a digestive disorder. I took:
Vitamin B complex
Magnesium
Folic Acid

I have Arthritis and two years ago started waking up in the middle of the night with 'Stigmata' pain, center of hands and feet. I saw my Physician who had just been on a Course about PN and told me I was LUCKY, he recognized the symptoms and started me on Lyrica. As long as I remember to take it I am fine, but some days I get so busy. I do not have Diabetes but they keep checking for it.

Dear Rachel,
I have PN. I have diabetes and I am also amputee. I have taken Gabapentin (Neurotin) and now Lyrica. But there are many for PN medications. These 2 medications were both good for me. They helped me alot. I still have to take pain medication though. PN is very painful and it feels like someone is stabbing you with needles or sometimes even with knifes. My legs cramp up and go into spams that lasts for hours. All you can do is take some pain pills and relax your body and wait for them to stop. I hope your grandma finds a medication that works for her.

For the past 3 years I have suffered daily with neuropathy. Well it’s been just 1 week and I just cannot put into words how brilliant my results have been. I have absolutely no more hyper sensitivity and no more agonizing burning pains. I can’t explain it, but this thing works. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your secret with me.
