dierdre,
"hammer doesn't show the magnificence of the carpenter"
I'm sorry; that's an ignorant, biased argument.
Try this:
A great painting CAN show the magnificant talent of the painter. Ever priced a prized painting?
Hence; God's creation, shows HIS magnificance.

No.
Science shows how the material world works. It's about mechanics and the how. Religion deals with the spiritual and the why. The physical is a tool. Just as the hammer doesn't show the magnificence of the carpenter, the physical is a tool for the spiritual. Real beauty is in the soul and the spirit.
A sunset isn't intrinsically beautiful; it is the ability of the one who sees it that makes it so. It says more about the beholder than it does about a "magnificent bending of light".

The problem always begins with somebody writing the word truth in big capital letters, as if this is absolute and final word. Well, if you ever study philosophy, ethics and debate, you will discover that such absolutist arguments are very difficult to support and often lead to fallacies; especially when you try to back up your premise with a point that can neither be proven nor disproven and therefore winds up as an endless point to be circled.
How about... the extraodinary magnificence, diversity, complexity and majesty of science's discoveries could be used as evidence of an immense design. If there is such a design, then does it appear to indicate that there could be a designer?
Instead of proslytizing TRUTHS, why don't we share ideas. Bottom line is that the divine is a subjective experience and those that don't believe won't be won over over anyone's TRUTH, and those that do believe (if they have a strong faith instead of a blind one) will not lose their belief regardles of anyone's argument.

The premise behind scientific inquiry is that the search for truth is a never ending quest. It does not assume that there was a creator, and does not expect to find that there was one. The only designers that scientists have found, for example, are the organisms that, once having been the cause and effect results of aeons of energy bombarding itself, found they could design themselves. They came to call that process evolution. Some of them couldn't quite grasp that they were not themselves a product of design - but eventually they will - if they don't perish first from perpetual ignorance.

The God Christians revere has proved himself completely inept in everything he has done. That is rather limp as a thing to praise. If you think his creation of the human race was a perfection, you have a large reality problem.

God does not exist. So no it doesn't. It simply shows the universe is magnificent just the way it is, it does not point to a creator-god. Nice try.

I could just as easily say that it shows what a wonderful world can exist even in the absence of a god. And I can deny refutation just as stubbornly without offering anything in support of my claims.

If you believe in god, then sure, it can be thought of that way.
Edit: How can you claim god as fact when there's no empirical evidence for his existence?

Nice try.
