When sending your own care package:
Care packages should include food such as beef jerky, candy, gum, reading and writing material ,personal hygiene items and news from home.Care packages should never be bigger than a shoe box.
The second link is the best one that I came across for information about care packages.
By-the-way, I appreciate your support for our troops for I am one myself
Good Luck on the packages,
SSG Schramm

You can go to the post office and get a flat rate box and pack it with as much stuff as you can, and ship it for $8.10, until sometime in May and then it goes up to 9.15. Overseas charges don't kick in b/c you are sending it to an APO zipcode, which is still considered United States. You can fill it with bricks or popcorn, no matter what the weight, it's a flat $8.10. Depending on what you are wanting to send (ie...a food box, a personal toiletries box or an entertainment box) you can fill one for about $25-$30. Rule of thumb though...don't pack food with deoderent and stuff like that. In the time it takes to get there, and with the heat....the food tastes like deo. It's great that you are taking time out to send your friend a care package. I've sent over 100 and it's really a lot of fun....OH and forget sending chocolate, it's too hot for that now. It'll be a melted mess by the time it reaches them.

They need items such as wet wipes, when they are out in the field,or on patrol,to clean their hands and face from all that grime over there in the middle east. They also would appreciate any homemade items such as cookies. Do not send food items with candles or perfume smelling items. You also cannot send Aerosol can sprays ,it is against postal regulations, but you can send those types of items through another delivery service. The perfume items, and candles, soaps should be sent separately from the food, because the smell will permeate the food items and make them not taste good. If you are going to send food items ,send them separately in a different box. I know that when I was overseas, the best thing I received was home made cookies, and I treasured every last nibble and it reminded me of home. Also home town newspapers were nice ,to read about things in the "real world" as the soldiers call it back here in USA.

it costs the same to send to iraq as it does to ship something down the street......APO/FPO addresses are considered US not overseas. If you can fit everything into one get a flat rate box from the post office then it doesnt matter how much it weighs. Im in Japan and my mother mails books to my daughter all the time and she can send like 5-6 hardcover books for $8.10. It would cost the same if the box was filled with socks or soemthing else lightweight.

i think the PO will send you boxes to mail things to the troops but i don;t remember all the details. Generally flat rate boxes are good. ALSO don't send pork products. You will have to fill out a customs form but not have to pay international shipping.

Go to the Post Office and ask for a flat rate box. They come in two sizes, one rather large, one sort of medium size. They cost $8.18 cents to get it to an APO/FPO no matter what they weight, and they have been getting there in about a week.

Rest assured it will be expensive!!! I uased to send stuff over to my friend in Iraq. It would be an average of $30. I hear that you can send it through the USO offices (check for yours locally) and they will ship it out for you (youpack it all up) for free. I have not tried this, but I am going to look into it!!

without the weight no one can help you much but you can check usps.com and they have a shipping rate calculator. otherwise, just pack it up and take it in and find out the price when you ship it.
