I went to the EPA website about getting my house tested for lead because I am about to do some remodeling, but it didn't give me any information for my state (PA). I have no idea where there nearest risk acessor or whatever they call them, is to have them be able to come and test. Also, how much does it cost?

Look in your yellow pages under "Lead Detection & Removal Residential". Lead paint is tested using a special gun looking instrument that has a radioactive isotope that makes a reading of how much lead is present in the painted surface. Usally the tester will take about 35-50 readings around the house and record the readings from each location. The other way of taking samples is to scrape off 2" x 2" patches and sending them to the lab, this is the expensive method and not practical for the typical home. One thing, when lead paint is discovered it must be disclosed when the home is sold (that's not necessarily bad). If the lead is encapsulated or removed and disposed of, it still must be disclosed.

Another source other than the ones given by others is the AIHA consultants list. Just pick asbestos/lead as the specialty.

The costs will depend on factors such as house size and how complete you want the inspection. You can have just some high risks areas looked at or every wall in the house. If each wall is painted differently, they all have to be checked in a full assessment.

Go to Home Depot and ask for a lead paint test kit. There are 3 test per kit and usually under $10. They can also be used on other surfaces that you may suspect of lead.

Check with your local state Department of Environmental Protection they should have local companies that can perform that assessment. There are companies on line that will test but your collecting the samples may overlook some of the sources of LBP such as window sills.

The online assessments are $10-30 dollars

Lead paint was banned in 1978. If your home is older than this, you can be sureyou have lead paint in it.
