When the US and UK and rest of the western world no longer has an interest in the Middle East, wars will break out all over (just as they have for centuries), and the whole region wil probably degenerate back into the middle ages.

No. It won't happen.

Islam, while an extremely popular religion, has yet to truly escape the Middle East (certain eastern regions of Asia and Micronesia not withstanding).

Christianity is too entrenched in the West, and is willing (as the Pope proved recently by breaking with traditional Catholic doctrine and agreeing with the possibility that un-baptized babies who die may not go to "limbo" but instead might actually be allowed into "Heaven") to change with the times and grow with the religious needs of society.

Islamic fundamentals, such as the harsh treatment and domination of women and their rights, can only be spread through tyrannical and/or military enforcement. It would never be embraced by the comparatively open-minded societies of the West.

And as we've seen, over and over and over, you can only force things on populations for so long before repercussions arise.

Christianity, like it or not, is quite safe on this side of the world for a long time to come I believe.

To the poster about convert at the sword, I was a Christian and I convert to Islam on my own free will, no one put a sword to my throat and force me to convert. Not a bad article at all...though it might have been better if you had just posted the link. Soemthing that many in the anti-Islam crowd forget is that there really are people who are trying to take the religion out of the hands of the extremists. Unfortunately the extremists are much more likely to resort to violence than they are.
