Atheists have a faith, non-religious probably don't give the matter much thought.

see the question i have posted :"atheism " doesn't necessarily mean "not religious".
according to the oxford dictionary :atheism=non belief in God
since most people of the English speaking world are christians, they assume that if u don't believe in God, u don't have a religion. that's not true.Buddhists don't believe in God but they do have a religion.
technically speaking though,Buddhism would be a philosophy. but according to usage it's a religion.e.g.if u ask a Buddhist what religion he's from hed say "i'm a Buddhist"
anyway,to cut a long story short, people who are not religious should be called "people who are not religious" because u can't ASSUME that a person who doesn't believe in God,doesn't have a religion.it's a common misconception

1 archaic : UNGODLINESS, WICKEDNESS
2 a : a disbelief in the existence of deity b : the doctrine that there is no deity
That is atheism by definition of Merriam-Webster. Non-Religious obviously must mean a person who does not believe in religion or mystical things. An atheist is someone who does not believe in gods.

Do you want to say that the CIA is the final say on religion? That is a pretty weird assertion. It isn't their specialty at all.

Non-religious would be those people who don't care one way or the other. Atheists DO care enough to label themselves. It is NOT a religion.
Nice try at TRYING to use reason and logic, though. Kudos to you.

Because the people who designed the study set it up that way?
They aren't the Final Authority in whether or not "Atheism" is a religion dear-heart!
