It's an opportunity to be in a different setting where you can be in the dark and make out not worrying about anyone watching you cause they are focused on the movie

Thrill of possibly being caught...since it's dark it's semi-private, but still in public...some people have fetishes or fantasies of doing it in public, the theater gives them that opportunity without them being out in the broad daylight where they could easily be seen. Moviegoers attention is typically pointed toward the big screen, unless it's their row-neighbor that's making out.

Some find it to be a good location to make out, because it is dark and no one really cares.

personally i never understood this...why pay 10 bucks to do something you can do any where? lol. in my opinion it's fun to "play around" in the movie...the making out comes in the car afterwards. but if i'm paying money...i'm keeping my eyes on the screen.

I guess because they don't mind public displays of affection. I personally find people like that nauseating. I never think PDA is appropriate.
