Hi all

We have a beautiful month old lab who has chewed her way through 4 beds. Luckily she hasnt chewed anything else and is generally quite well behaved. Its just the mattresses that we put in her kennel she has taken a liking to. She has lots of chew toys and we give her marrow bones to chew on as well.

Does anybody have any tips for something I could put on the bed to stop her chewing it - but not put her off sleeping on it.

Hope you can help!

Unfortunately you have to wait till she gets a little older...I have a little over a year old lab, He finally stopped chewing his beds...believe it or not I got a bunch of polyester table clothes and but them into a big ball on the floor of his pen, and he couldn't rip it apart, but you really just have to wait to she is a little older....some people told me they stay in the puppy stage till their 2!! I even invested in a bed that cost me 150.00 that was suppose to be indestructible...ya right...it lasted a day :)

Unfortunately, removing the bed is by far your best option.

Every time you buy her a new bed and she chews it up, she has the possibility of ingesting parts of the bed. This can cause intestinal blockages, some of which require expensive surgery to remove.

I don't find deterrant sprays very effective. They need to be reapplied often, if they wear off she'll know. Also I've met many, many dogs that actually LOVE them, so you could unintentionally cause her to chew even more.

Give her a few months without a bed in her crate, and then try again. Remove the bed again at the first sign she may be chewing on it. If you want her to have a bed, let her have one outside the crate and let her use it when you are around to supervise.

Maybe instead of a mattress just fold up a soft blanket and put in the kennell. Maybe she is staying to long in the kennel.
Or she is getting bored.. try more chew toys or rawhide bones, my dogs love bones. I have a 5 yr. old black lab and these are very hyper dogs. If I had kennelled her at 9 months she would have chewed everything up. They need lots of exercise. Good Luck

I have two labs they are chewers so get them Nyla bones,
and pigs ears, these will help the chewing ,but spray bed
with this bitter apple or take bed away.If they won't stop
chewing it up.When you catch them chewing say no chew,
replace right then with a chew toy.Do this every time you see them chewing it takes a few times...Good luck.
Try Bitter Apple.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7rB

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Give your dog a bone that she can chew on instead. This will entertain her, plus you can put some peanut butter on the bone to make it taste better. Another great chew item is the Pig Ear, my dogs are obsessed with these! Try both of these to distract her from the bed.

you have to be stern and consistent. each time she starts to chew on it. say, "leave it." in a deep stern voiice. dont yell though. and if she does praise her and say, "good girl to leave it" in your praise voice.
if she doesnt dont say no or leave it again. becasue like a child you need to teach that you'll say it once and want them to do it.
get a water bottle and fill it 9 parts water and 1 part vinegar. and squirt her in the face. anywhere. If you do anymore vinegar that that, it can sting their eye, but if you dont its harmless. they wont like the taste and will drop it.
keep squirting until she stops chewing.
when she stops praise her and hand her a toy of hers that is okay to chew.
also, dont give her too much toys, she might think that its okay too chew on everything since she has so many things she can.
dont change your words around. if its leave it dont say drop it the next time.
and dont punish her if you find something ripped up after she did the act.
you have to punsih catching her in the act.
remember, keep doing this and be the alpha leader.
good luckk. :]]

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/epOKw

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

You can try spraying the bed with bitter apple, and then cover it with a sheet. I take my old bed sheets, cut them in half, sew the edges (3 sides), and then slide them over the dog bed. Then you can take them off and wash as you do your own laundry. Just don't have her sleep directly on the bitter apple spray!
