The older you get the less sleep you need, which is why some old people are up at 4am when everyone else has only been in bed a few hours. Teenagers need about 10 hours.

The amount needed differs with each person.
I feel at my best when I've had a good 7 hours of sleep.
HOWEVER, usually, I wind up getting between 5 and 6 hours of sleep.
I can function with 4, but I am really ding-y and stupid with 4 hours. My job requires a lot of concentration and accuracy, so I try VERY hard to get at least 6 hours of sleep before workdays.
I have also functioned (at work) with no sleep... but that has been a rare occasion, and as I get older, I have less trust in my ability to do that.

9-10 is best for me, but my sleep quality sucks so I have to make up for it in quantity.
(Note: I frequently run on 6-7)
