what does it mean when in the marines people say that someone was shot by " friendly fire"

In the world wars [most likely WWII], the American tanks were called "friendlies".

The reason for that, i dont know, but whenever the tanks shot some of their own troops, it was called "friendly fire"

Another reason why is because your own troops are your "friends"

that means that that person was shot by someone fighting for the same "side". They got shot by accident and not by the opposing side, like for example the other country.

i think it means that the person was shot accidently by another marine

"Friendly fire" takes place when a fellow marine is shooting at other marines in his troop, etc. "Enemy fire" is when the opposing country's marines are firing on us.

that someone on the same side shot them. it wasn't an enemy.
