My 13 yr old cat has been ill for the last few months she had surgery to remove a mammory tumor in October. She healed fine and was back to her normal self. In the last 2 months the tumors have returned but she was still ok and acting normal. In the past 2 weeks she hasn't been eating and she hides from the family and rather not be touched. I noticed an infected looking sore on her lip and took her to the vet. blood test were done and all come back fine. she was given a antibiotic injection just in case the sore was infected and it had spreaded throughout her body. The next day she started vomiting. as the hours passed she couldn't walk or stand. She just lay there immobilized. I don't want to put her to sleep because I think that is cruel plus I wouldnt be able to go through with it. I will feel like I am killing her. I rather she die at home comfortably around family. I am unsure of cats behavior when they are preparing to die can someone help me?

For a cat who is suffering euthanasia is the most humane way to go. Check with your vet to make sure something else is not going on, I have had to put a cat to sleep, they just go to sleep, it is very peaceful.

It's a very hard thing to face. I had 2 cats that I had to put to sleep, both with tumors at various times. I spoke to my vet and he said I would know when it was time and I did. The process is painless and peaceful and some vets will come to your house to avoid the trauma of travel for your cat. It's better than watching your friend suffer and not being able to help at all. It is really a loving decision especially when the quality of your pet's life has declined. Good luck with a hard situation.

I'm so sorry. I went through this last year with my 13 year old cat. She had the tumors also. She was put on hormones 3 years earlier. They got the the point they were not helping. We took her to a vet who said she was in pain. If we let her live we would just be prolonging the suffering. He put her down very quietly and humanely. It's still sad to think about. I still look for her to be lying on my sister's bed. I know she's not in pain now.

Honestly, she really could be.

Just always keep in mind.. Life is terminal, no matter what you do.

Putting your cat to sleep, if it is the only real option, is actually the nicest thing you could do for her, she would just go to sleep and not feel pain anymore.

At 13 years old, your cat has already had a full life, you are lucky to have had her as long as you have.

I know it isn't easy, I don't know what I'll do when (not if) my cat passes away, make the most of the memories you have left to make before it is too late.

From what you describe, it doesn't sound good....

As far as putting your cat to sleep, what IS cruel is letting her keep suffering if she is in pain, which it sounds like she is. If she is dying, it doesn't sound like she's very comfortable either.

Putting an animal to sleep is painless and humane, and sends them Home without prolonged suffering. If you prefer, the procedure can be done at your home with family around so the animal is not stressed by a trip to the clinic. Please talk to your vet about this and do whatever he or she recommends.

Monitor her the rest of the night and make sure she is comfortable (i.e., supply her with warm blankets and lots of attention). If she is still acting strangely in the morning, take her to the vet and ask what he thinks. If he gives you the option, I strongly advise you to take it. When a cat senses their oncoming death, they usually try to hide and find a place to die peacefully, usually away from anyone else. She might be suffering, and I'm sure thats the last thing you want right now.

Your poor kitty is probably terrified and doesn't understand what it happening to her. Unlike people, cats do not have the capability of knowing that a trip to the vet is for her own good, or why she is ill. The stress of not being able to process that information can actually make the cat sicker.

So what you have now is a terrified kitty who doesn't understand why she is ill.

I am so sorry that you are going thru this-----it is very heart-breaking, I know.
My cat, 7 seven years old got sick in November. After numerous blood transfusions and surgery, he became worse.
Finally I was called and told that he had arrested and they were giving him cpr--should they continue. I had to say NO, simply because he had suffered so much--I could not keep putting him thru torture.
I cannot tell you what to do---but please don't let her linger in pain because you think it is cruel to euthanize.
As long as I was given hope I continued to seek help, but I knew when it was time to end it.
You and your kitty will be in my prayers.

I feel your pain, Yes she is dying and she is suffering, The best thing your cat would want you to do is to put her to sleep, its not inhumane at this point since she is dying and she will die anyways, put her out of her misery and not let her suffer like this, get her cremated and cherish the memorys forever.
