…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. -Matthew 17:20

It just seems to keep popping up & I'd like to hear what others have to say on it. Preferrably of faith, but this is Yahoo! Answers, so ya know... Thanks.

Problems in the bible are sometimes called mountains. It may be possible to move a mountain physcially with enough faith, or walk on water, but I've yet met anyone who had enough to do so. In a way it could be a metaphor that if you have faith and say to the problem to get out of the way, God will make it so. I will not try to put words in the mouth of God by claiming it to be physically real or a metaphor, after all Jesus and the apostles after Him preformed healings, cast out demons, and such based on faith alone. So is it possible to actually move a mountain? I don't see why not, but it's very difficult to maintain the faith to do so, which is what I think He meant about the mustard seed. (the mustard seed was the smallest seed they used when growing things, thus the size of the seed was important)

Matthew 17:20 says, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

It is an affirmation of the power of God, IF we belive!!!

The Parable of the Mustard Seed was taught in rhetorical hyperbole. Here Jesus uses a shrub/tree coming from a seed (John 12:24) to represent kingdom growth, consistent with other tree/kingdom references (Ezekiel 17:23 and Daniel 4:11-21). With the seed’s growth, it attracts the presence of evil - depicted as birds (Matthew 13:4,19; Revelation 18:2) to dilute the church while taking advantage of its benefits.

So the picture painted in the Parable of the Mustard Seed by Jesus is of the humble beginnings of the church experiencing an explosive rate of growth. It grows large and becomes a source of food, rest, and shelter, for both believers and false professing individuals that seek to consume or take advantage of its benefits while residing or mixing among what was produced by the seed (1 Corinthians 5:1, 6:7, 2 Corinthians 11:13, Galatians 1:7). In other words, Jesus predicts that while the church will grow extremely large from just a small start, it will not remain pure. While this is not a condemnation of the "bigness" of modern Christianity, it does show us the greatest burden that comes with it. The Parable of the Mustard Seed is both a prediction and a warning. May we listen to its message.

The Kingdom of GOD is a Parallel Universe.
It undergirds the Physical Realm (Universe).
The Kingdom of GOD makes Physical Stuff Possible.
Everything is Made outta Faith (the Substance of things hoped for) GOD hoped for a Universe (Physical Realm) and HE Created it outta Faith.
Now, when you Learn how to come outta Fear and start Living in the Love of GOD (faith works by Love) and Faith (spiritual substance) which Operates on Higher Laws than the Physical Universe does---when you Command the Mountain to Move, the Faith that the Mountain is made outta of, moves and the Dirt and Rocks have to go along for the Ride.
Ditto........(don't hurt anybody trying this, hehe!)

Well you cant take it literally. You cant just walk up to a mountain and move it. I know that having faith in God and praying has helped me overcome many things I never thought I could. Sometimes what seems like a mountain to you might just be an ant hill to others, but if you have enough faith and trust in God you will overcome it.

While the verse can be taken literally in that God would move a mountain if someone prayed for Him to do so and it was in his will to move that mountain the verse is most often seen as being a metaphor for faith in prayer resulting in miraculous results when it seems like the circumstances are like a huge mountain in our path.

You've had good answers and I concur that God will honor your faith no matter what level it is. But this verse shows that as believers we should build up our faith at a level that God can do mightily through prayer and belief. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of
God as in Romans 10:17. That is the way to increase faith.

a mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds, yet it grows into a large bush ( never seen one) So faithgrows. you have the ability to create! Words are very powerful, thats why satan invented slang. Speak solutions to the "mountains" in your life, and whatever you pray, believe that you have recieved, speak Matt 17:20 over & over in your head ( meditate) and the Holy Spirit will enlighten the meaning for you

Everything in the "new testament" was designed specifically to enhance the "self management" of the slaves of the Roman Empire which enable the Romans to convert from chattel slavery to serfdom as of the creation of christianity between 313AD and 367AD. Christianity was designed to be the master, manager, and controller of the slaves of the Roman Empire for the enhancement of profits which it did very successfully until 1775 and the American revolution that threw religion out of "government". Not so much the quantity of their faith as its quality. .. a faith that is bathed in prayer.

Say to this mountain, 'Move form here to there'. A proverbial statement meaning to remove great difficulties. In this context it refers to removing the problems associated with the work of the kingdom. : )
