The Marines are part of the Navy.
The US Military consists of 4 Branches
Navy (including the Marines)
Army
Air Force (which used to be a part of the Army, but is now separate)
Coast Guard (lol)
The Army's primary purpose is to fight foreign aggressors and wars on land.
The Navy's primary purpose is to fight foreign aggressors and wars by sea.
The Air Force's primary purpose is to fight foreign aggressors and wars in the air.
The Coast Guard's primary purpose is to protect the coastlines of the USA. (Generally it's not used for attacking other countries, but solely for defense of ours).
People who say the Marines attack first in an invasion of a foreign country are a little deluded. The Air Force (and attack aircraft of the Navy and Army, too) almost always attack first by air.
Then when the enemies defenses are weakened sufficiently and we are ready to move in ground forces (troops), the Marines go, because they are part of the Navy, which is already engaged in the attack and has ships and forces in theatre. At the same time, Navy Seals and Army Special Forces, as well as paratroopers from the Air Force and Army are also used.
The general infantry of the Army is sent in (from the US or from other closer bases) once the Air Force, Navy and Marines and various special operatives have made it possible (have secured a place) for the Army's huge number of troops to be brought into the theatre securely.

The Marines are the first to land in enemy land and the Army secures what the Marines had taken. The Army continues the attack inland until the enemy is annihilated. The Army and Marines which is a unit of the Navy is a part of the Armed Forces together with the Air Force.

In the beginning, there was the Army. Then the Army started using planes and ships. The planes were part of the Army's air force, which later became their own, the Air Force. The Navel department became the Navy. And the Marines are part of the Navy branching out on their own.

Marines are actually part of the Navy. The Army is soldiers. They are ALL branches of the military and all equally as important, although if you talk to members of each branch, they all seem to complain about the other branches - which I never understood myself. I've asked my husband about it, and I never get a straight answer...
Any hootie... there are 5 branches of the US Military. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and lets not forget the Coast Guard. All are separate, but they work together.
Each branch of the military has a uniqueness and areas where they excel.

The USMC is the expeditionary branch of the US Navy. The Army, Navy, Air Force, and all of their reserves are part of the Department of Defense. Those are the three branches of the US military.
The coast guard falls under the Department of Homeland Security, but in times of war goes to the DoD.

marines are an organization that is technically part of the Navy, they are all in all Naval Infantry, highly specialized in attacking from the sea/ Tha Army is the Army, very large, cumbersom, made to fight larger scale warfare than the Marine Corps, well Trained, but the Marine Corps are considered and in my opiniion are an elite organization.
