Children know how to love from the time they are born. What people teach them is how to treat others.
Generally the mother is the first person they have contact with and certainly the most contact with for the first year. It will be the way she treats her little one that sets how the infant will recognize how that love (or not) is expressed.
Secondly how the mother treats/ is treated by the husband will reflect how the child believes other people react with each other.

This is a great subject matter. It's relative...is there a mother and a father? Is there only a mother, only a father? Neither? It brings us back to relativity...every situation holds no answer in general terms because every situation may be different. This is the point they want you to realize and write about. There is no either, or. It may be the mother, it may be the father, it may be the grandparents, it may be an aunt, it may be the community....bottom line is: the caretaker, whomever they may be, teach the child to love. It's all relative to whoever is in the child's life...this is the point they want you to realize and write about. If both parents are in the child's life, then the child learns how to love through both, although, they may learn how to nurture more through the female in their life.
By the way, congratulations on your upcoming graduation.

It all depend on the individual. I know some single dads who do a fine job with teaching their children to be compassionate. And we also have a lot of stay at home dads who take on the role of the hands on parent. So what use to be known as the job of the mother has changed considerably in the last few years.

Neither. Both. What about kids raised in orphanages, or foster homes? And those raised by aunts & grandparents?
Whomever is the authority/guardian in a child's like will be the primary influence on a child's capacity to and understanding of love.

I believe that most people a child comes in contact with teach that child to love just by the tone of their voice, their touch, and just the way the interact with the child. My children learn to love with mommy and daddy at home equally.....

It depends on the parent. My husband teaches our kids about love just as much as I do. Children are going to learn what they are shown, and a good father will show his love for his kids (and their mom) as much as a mother does.
