There is more to the "profession" of auto racing than just driving.Though drivers seem to be the the most important key to the profession look at the mechanics, body shop teams, the administrative staff of teams. We overlook these people and they are professionals that keep the teams running.
Being into and working in motorsports is a job.The job is as important as any career a person chooses to go into.So when the 43 cars take the green Sunday remember that there are hundres of jobs making that car go.
As for the driving this starts as a young person with intrest in go-carts and builds to hobby stocks, midgets and keep going up to reach the touring levels"hooters cup,ARCA,USAC,NACAR".the path is up to the individual and how much effort they want to put into into it.

Self motivation and Practice. Find a class you wish to try out (maybe 4 cylinder stock). Get yourself a stock car for that class. Go to local tracks to see if you can buy in some seat time during the off season or during the week when no race is running.
Once you get the feel of the car, why not participate with Saturday night events. Don't worry about winning. Even rookies in NASCAR has to get the feel for the car and track before they can concentrate on winning. Time will only tell if you are willing to work up to the degree of a professional stock car driver.
Nothing is impossible when you have the power of determination...

The put in a lot of hard work.
They have to work their way up the ranks.
Start at your local track, get noticed. If you're good you can move up to a touring series. Then try to get into the ASA or Hooters Pro Cup (or another similar series). Next step is ARCA. If you're good in ARCA, you could get offered a Busch/Truck ride. You have to be 18 to drive in the top-3 NASCAR series. You really need to be racing locally by 14 or 15. 16 or 17 at the latest.
There are other routes, like open wheel, dirt racing, etc... Several guys have come up through USAC (Stewart, Kahne, Yeley, etc...)

Racing school is unnecessary., contrary to what someone said. Many Cup guys do go to "racing school" but usually after they have reached a top series. Most commonly, they go there for road course help.

People are not going to just be offered a ride out of the blue. It is a long, hard road to the top.

You have to grow up racing. You get to know the other people, it's big business, so you have to have business sense as well as driving talent. Also, having lots of money is always a plus.

Racing Go-carts is the first step. Hand/eye coordination is a must and nothing does it better than carting.
