A Christian might care if you're a Christian or an atheist because s/he's worried about your immortal soul.
An atheist might care b/c of general anger against Christians, a trait I've seen many atheists display. Then again, you have to admit that the religious right / fundamentalist section of our religion can be infuriating in all their self-righteousness sometimes.
As far as your question about "tearing Christians apart," didn't Someone recommend rejoicing and being glad when persecuted for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven?

If you're a real Christian in the traditional sense, you feel an urgency to eliminate all but Christianity in people out of concern for their souls.
If you're an Atheist, having a world with more Christians isn't exactly appealing.
Accepting the fact doesn't prohibit desire to change it. This is a forum for debate and answer. If you don't want that, go somewhere where everyone thinks the same way about religion.

What I find interesting is how there must have been a teenager in Rome who refused to go to temple with his parents and the father yelled, "You go put your good toga on and we're going to slaughter this ram for Zeus young man!" (Of course it sounded a tad different). We all act as if we're enlightened, when the fact of the matter is that science has debunked every religion that humans have managed to create so far. Every generation thinks they live in the "Golden Age" when, in fact, humans are still in their infancy as a species. All I hope is that we somehow get our crap together before we collapse into the sun, or get picked off by some errant chunk of cosmic debris.

If you have obtained some knowledge that you believe would help others lead significantly happier and more productive lives, you'd be a pretty terrible person if you didn't try to share it.
This falls under the general philosophy of treating others as we'd want to be treated.
By that same guide, we should be courteous and respectful to all even if they aren't courteous to us.

The only people who are 'right' are not viewing the world through 'faith' but through 'Facts'. Faith based 'reality' is a delusion. It cannot be shown to be factual. Therefore it isn't true. It's true we're not all the same, and those who use faith over facts should not even be allowed to vote. I'm personally sick of where you people are dragging the rest of us off to.

People are not satisfied with feeling they are right; they need everyone else to agree with them.
That, and a need to create conflict.
They think they are doing everyone a favor by 'spreading the truth,' not realizing that what is true for them may not be true for others.

You're right, people get too caught up in religion. If you think about it Jesus wasn't all religious and he said he was the way to God and to Heaven, not a religion.
