ok please take the time to read and understand my situation, please!

ok i needed a root canal done but i just spent $1000 on one so I was waiting until the end of summer to get it.
Well the tooth had a lot of decay and was painful so my dentist did an "open and med" where he cleaned the decay, cut off the nerves of my tooth, and filled the cavity with temporary filling.
I want this to last 3 months, but today I accidentally used that tooth to bite on something and a piece of the tooth cracked off. Its a molar, so the part that cracked was a tiny piece on the side of it... my teeth are strong so i guess its weak now because of the filing that he did... but the whole tooth is still there and looks decent.
But is this a problem, should I go to my dentist bc a small part cracked off? It doesn't hurt and I definately won't use it to eat anymore.
I just don't want to end up having to get the the tooth extracted!

When the nerve is removed from the tooth, the tooth becomes brittle and can break easy, could be a piece of the filling that came out but if I were you, I would go back to the dentist and have them take a quick peak just to make sure, that visist shouldn't cost you anything just call them and tell them you want a follow up visit to make sure the tooth isn't compromised. Good luck

Ok, problem with the "small part" that just cracked off? The temporary filling will go away faster than expected b/c now more of it is exposed to saliva. The procedure for a root canal requires a huge cavity to access the roots so right now that tooth is very vulnerable. It also might get infected if the root canal isn't finished. Just because your dentist extracted the nerves doesn't mean that it won't hurt. Remember that periodontal tissue- everything surrounding the tooth- is alive so to avoid an extraction try to get the treatment done as soon as possible, and then a filling. It would be cheaper than a brigde or a dental implant.

You should definately go back to check with the dentist. The piece of what fell off could be part of the tooth or it might be the filling. Since the nerve has been cut, you can't feel it if the tooth is in pain which means that there could be some damage occuring to the tooth.

If there is a part of the filling or the tooth that fell off, there's a chance of decay or bacteria leaking into the tooth and causing way more trouble then just the substantial decay. I'd go back to the dentist ASAP and have him look at it. He could at least redo the temporary filling so that if part of it did fill out then, he won't have to do the root canal earlier if there's a risk of infection.

I know that finances are tight, but I'd still get it checked out and get the filling redone. Then you can get the root canal at the end of summer.

I don't believe this is a problem that requires another visit to the dentist. As long as the temporary filling is still intact, you should be fine. The important thing is to not chew on this tooth as it is definitely weakened and prone to fracture. Try to get the root canal treatment as soon as soon as you are financially able as you are on borrowed time with this tooth.

IF THE REST OF THE TOOTH APPEARS IN GOOD SHAPES, THEN THIS SMALL PIECE WAS PROBABLY A PIECE OF THE TEMPORARY FILLING AND THERE IS NOT MUCH YOU CAN DO BUT TO DRILL IT ALL OUT AND PLACE A NEW TEMP.
A CROWN WILL BE BEST FOR THIS TOOTH A.S.A.P. THE TOOTH WILL GRADUALLY BECOME BRITTLE SO A CROWN FOR IT IS VERY NEEDED.
