Mark Ryden is a modern painter (and still alive) who works mainly in surrealism, sometimes in neo-realism, sometimes in fantasy. You would have to call what he does 'Modern' to fit into one of the groups you've suggested here. And he's American, so he wouldn't exactly fit into any European group.

I like his work a lot, by the way.
