It is the part of you that lives on even when your mortal body ceases to exist. It is in essence, who you are and who you'll always be.

To answer what a soul is, you need to ask, what is a body and its purpouse? The reason why we have a body is so that we can accomplish what the soul wants to do. Think of it as the connection the mind has to the nerves, tissues and muscles. The mind, being the soul, knows what it wants to do and the nerves, tissues, muscles (body) accomplishes this.
Do you ever have a dream and you try to wake-up, you almost do, but you can't and at the second attempt, you do? You feel that pressure on you as you try to wake-up? That is your soul having wondered abouts and returning to your body, but is caught in between because you want to wake-up (this does not do or harm anything). Then finally, it's rested back in your body and you are awake. :-) But this of soul leaving/returning is philosophy though, every culture has their own...

A soul is the essence of a person it is actually who we are. Because in it is our will, emotion, and our intellect. As far as getting in touch with it is concerned well.... we are it lol we really cant help touching it.

The souls of people are the thoughts of God
The soul is entwine with the spirit as God breathe into His thoughts.
The souls is created by God's thoughts, and the soul lives as spirit as God gave it breath and send it on it's way to be redeem, born as a baby.

I have always wondered this myself, and to answer your question, I didn't get an answer until my mother told me that your soul is nothing but energy that has been trapped inside your body. When we die, I assume that that energy is released, and we go to a place unlike any other.

You alone can or have a soul, just as long as you believe it. There is no one in this earth who can verify the existence of such thing. Perhaps you are mistakenly naming your conscience as your soul.

A soul is your inner self. It is what hold your belief and your true self.
Some times I sit and think about what I believe, who I am, and who I want to be.

I always figured that the soul included a person's sentience, identity, etc. If it were something mystical and incomprehensible, why would it have been invented to explain things?

I believe in a god of unconditional love that created our souls with free will (not humans) in his likeness. many souls could not bear to leave fathers side for the loss of love. many souls went out and returned to share their adventures. Some souls rebeled wanted to be a god themselves. This place (earth system) WAS CREATED FOR THE SOUL TO MAKE ITS FINAL CHOICE. Do they really want to be a "little God and live in dominion=lordship over others. or return to father of love/fellowship/joy/sharing/ab... bliss.
What if heaven and hell are exactly the same except for one difference? What ever you picture in your head heaven to be, imagine hell to be the same except for one difference. Everything you can do in heaven you can do in hell except for one difference. The difference is love or dominion. If you choose love you are in heaven, you are sharing love/joy/fellowship, absolute bliss in all you do.
If you choose dominion you are in hell, everyone will be dominion bent, acting without regard to anything but personal pleasure, personal gain, exercising power over others. Everyman for himself in all that is done. Everything else is the same.
Now which path do/will you choose? LOVE or DOMINION
