I was in psychology and I learned that the suggested time for all people above the age of 18 should be 8-9 hours to keep a clear mind and to insure good REM sleep.

As much as you think you need. If you are a energetic 60 something then more, if you are a sedentary 60 something then less. It is not how much should should get, it is the quality of sleep that counts.

Depends on the person. Babies sleep alot because they need the regeneration due to their rapid growth. Id say about 18 hours a day, right? Teens, about 12 hours, young adults and adults who are fully developed need about 8 hrs...following that path, I'd lend my estimate at 6-8 depending on your health issues and stress levels.

Read a great book by a doc who is the real deal... not some jerk. "Healthy Aging" by Andrew Weil, MD. All sorts of hints to keep up your energy, what your diet ought to include, and sleep, as well. Cheap, in paperback, but you'll be doing a lot of underlining.
