Randall Jeppesen & Sandra Yi Reporting
Police in Utah County are looking for the thieves who broke into a deputy's truck overnight. It was parked in the driveway of the deputy's home in Lehi.
They pried open a window then took the time to break the device which secured the shotgun. Police believe the thieves may have been watching the truck for several days. "We feel this was a target on law enforcement," Sgt. Jeff Swenson of the Lehi Police Dept. says. Lt. Dennis Harris with the Utah County Sherif

Policeman are authorize only to carry the firearms that are issued to them. Thus, other weapons found in their possession are not allowed.

They do nothing but lay there unless someone moves them around . and stop hitting the pipe so hard , what do you mean by " what do legal weapons do in a local police car in the first place " First of all dear all weapons in a police car are legal weapons unless they are confiscated ,and placed in an evidence bag .....but the legal weapons actually do nothing , (unless it is a "smart legal weapon" , and does some of the driving for the Officer ,or it goes and gets the coffee and helps with all the paperwork .) Sorry for the last smart *ss comment ,but you left yourself wide open on that one

Police officers carry weapons in case they are needed for encounters that could require deadly force. Most officers carry 2 weapons on their person - in case one misfires and can't be cleared or if it is taken by force, usually there is a shotgun in the car for situations where wall penetration could be a factor, and in some a rifle for long distance shots.

While I agree the question doesn't make a lot of sense, I get the idea. A cop had too many weapons in his car, and you want to know why. Simple. He's a cop. He, my friend, is above the law. Welcome to America.

Are you trying to say "illegal weapons"?
Legal weapons are what the Officer would carry and/or have in his car.
