I have grown weary of being accused of hating someone simply because I disagree with or oppose their behavior. While there are right-wing radicals that despise homosexuals and wish them harm, they represent only a tiny fraction of the conservative constituency. In fact, those who spout hate toward the homosexual community usually aren't overly thrilled with my belief that the God of the Bible loves homosexuals and wants to transform their lives.

Of course "atheists" can be homophobes. A general principle runs that in order for us to feel ourselves to be members of a group there must be nonmembers - and this is the 'dark side'. We are inclined to define ourselves by our enemies - by those who are different from ourselves. Therefore any hetrosexual man, of any theology could easily take things to an extreme and be homophobic.

Well, homophobia implies that one fear homosexuals. Most people do not fear homosexuals. But many, like me, think it is wrong. Applying a name to me or anyone else will never change my mind and anyway the name is for your benefit not mine. Because I could careless what anyone calls me.

So why do people, all people that are straight take offense to someone calling them homosexual? Are these people to be know as a "not-homophobic, but don't call me homosexual?"
Why do they fear that someone thinks they are one? Yet claim that they are not homophobic. Liberals are really funny ain't they? Biggest and loudest name callers in the history of the world.

And atheists are not free thinkers, they all think the same. They spend hours upon hours trying to prove something isn't there that they say isn't there to begin with. Now that is what I call free thinking, not.

homophobia is a bogus homosexual media buzzword created and designed for the express purpose of fostering hatred and the false impression that persons who resist the homosexual agenda have something mentally wrong with them. The Nazis used similar techniques to manipulate public opinion against jews and persons who resisted their agenda in the 1940's Its called the " big lie" gambit. Tell a small lie and people willl catch you, tell a big lie and people may believe it. To answer your question , basically anybody can decide to resist the homosexual agenda regardless of religion or social background and Most, do.

There are four ways that people deal with phobias, according to me (because I've read about them, and this is how it made sense to me).

1. avoidance - the most well-known one.
2. escape - going and facing the fear again just to see if it's still the same, and using your fear to justify the idea that it's still reasonable; you also feel good about being capable of leaving (again)
3. enduring discomfort - this might be a lesser fear instead; it has also traditionally been mistaken for piety
4. holding tightly to people, objects or ideas - especially vehicular ones (vehere - to carry).

If you don't have love (1 Corinthians 13), you will tend to exhibit the four characteristics mentioned above in various configurations for the entire of your natural life. People tend to turn their phobias into idols, so they can keep a good eye on what they're up to.

Technically, homophobia simply refers to fear of things that are the same as each other. If you're talking about people, that's impossible.

I am you typical Libertarian “South-Park Conservative”. I am a “homophobe”, for a lack of a better term, but don’t link it to my faith, or previous lack of it. I think that if we could be “politically incorrect” here, we just inherently know it’s immoral and wrong. I’m not judging others, only my reaction when I’m around them. I had a brother die of Aids in 1988, and had the same reaction when I found out he was gay. Take a different social element for example. Would you feel comfortable around a couple of heroin addicts shooting up? Why? I think we all condition our social values based on what we want to justify to ourselves, or whatever acceptance we desire from others. I know that no-one likes to be judged socially, morally or ethically, and will tend to align ourselves with others that won’t judge us. This describes, in large part, the whole “Secular Progressive” movement, in my opinion. My belief is “Live and Let Live”, But, I don’t think that my reaction to them, short of discrimination should be manipulated either. It is being manipulated by constantly creating legislation that grants this behavior moral equivalency to everyone else. This I feel is the movement’s attempts to mainstream their behavior so that they don’t feel guilty for it.

I’m not a Sociologist, but I am a thinker.
Just my opinion because it was asked.

I think religious and cultural influence are the main reasons for homophobia. It's totally wrong to have a hateful attitude towards anyone.

Less likely for atheists but possible. Im not homophobic at all, but what Im about to say may offend insecure homosexuals, which is not my intent.

Islam is best described as a "self hating militant homosexual movement". Islam seeks to exterminate all heterosexual expression...we all know this...although my phrasing might offend the think skinned.

Religion aside, what is the best way to describe a social movement that seeks to exterminate all heterosexual expression by force? Whats wrong with MILITANT HOMOSEXUALITY?

I'm Catholic and not homophobic, but I've got an agnostic friend who is extremely homophobic. Homophobia does have strong roots in religion, but also society in general.

yes and no, because it can be only ones opinion not necessarily religion, a family can make a child hate homosexuals, without any religion put into it. However there are many religions that frown upon homosexual and can influence ones mind

Yes. They prob have some group to promote their hate as well. I personally believe that many non believers join churches just to have their hate of differences what ever they are excused. It is very sad. I am not afraid of homosexuals. The guys are fun and if you hang with them you don't have to worry about date rape or anything as they don't want me that way and the girls are like all girls used to hearing no and able to accept it. Now if my husband was sneaking and doing guys on the side I would be royally angry but openly gay and living double lives would not make me afraid. Jesus is my Lord but I prefer taking my own moral inventory. I'm hoping to continue my friendships with the gay people I know in heaven. Jesus made it clear to me in the bible that He will judging hearts and that we are not even capable of judging our own much less someone elses. I swear I think God speaks of man's arrogance more than homosexuality but look at our arrogant nation and our churches. But yeah it is possible for people of no religious background to hate gays. You don't have to be religious to fear what you don't know about.
