I'm not sure what the difference is between a Windows PC and a Mac, but I know I'm tired of Windows and someone told me a Mac is better. What do you say? Thanks.

We just had some of our college friends over for dinner and they asked this very same question, so I'll try to answer as best I can.

Philosophically, what's better for 'you' defines which platform is better of the two.

I have used PCs since Windows 3.1x (486SX/25) and Mac since 1998--each have their strengths, but for me I prefer Macintosh for its simplicity and for the resilience of the Mac OS.

For instance, when you have a brand-new Windows (XP or Vista) PC, you have a plethora of "trialware" or "shareware" pre-installed that is begging you to "upgrade" it to get the full functionality. This is very annoying and almost every PC company is notorious for doing this. My current PC (which runs Ubuntu Linux now) came w/ Windows XP Home Edition--when I wanted to burn a DVD of some pictures, it asked me to upgrade the software twice (Sonic). I had to grab an old copy of Nero, install it, and only then I could burn the DVD. All this to burn a DVD, yet even Ubuntu Linux (a 100% free operating system) will support DVD burning out of the box.

On a Mac, this would never have happened b/c Mac OS supports CD/DVD burning from the start and does not require any extra software to do so--Windows XP will let you burn a CD, but not a DVD.

I keep Windows simply as a contingency plan against software I may need to run in the future and can't find for Mac or Linux. Fortunately, because I'm a History/Social Science major, there's not a lot of need for software outside of what is available for the Mac.

My longtime girlfriend/fiance teaches math at the local city college and she uses Mathematica for some of her lesson plans. Mathematica is available on both platforms, and she prefers it on Mac b/c she can make Adobe PDFs of the formulas quite easily (and w/out having to buy Adobe Acrobat).

Value-wise, I believe there is more 'value' inside a Mac for the money you pay for it as opposed to purchasing a Windows machine.

Man I love this issue. As a person that's worked on and with both I'll try and not be bias. PC is cheaper, more customizable, and easier to upgrade. Mac doesn't have windows.. (yes.. that's the selling point on Macs).

Windows is more compatible with everything.. Mac OS is more user friendly. Windows is slower due to having alot of built in protection. Mac OS is in 10% of homes.. people don't write spy-ware and viruses for them so it doesn't get near as much.

What is all comes down to is how much you hate Windows. If you really really can't stand it then Mac OS is a really good OS.. it's easy to use, has fewer issues, and looks really nice. But your going to pay for it. There is ways to run Mac OS on a PC comp but it gets a little complicated.

With that said I still like PCs over Macs. I can build a PC that's as powerful if not more then a G5 for about a third the price. And I can upgrade it in a few years to be as good as the Gwhatever for even less. If you have the money and don't want windows and basically just use your comp to surf the net then go for it.. If you happen to play lots of games then PCs are the way to go.
