Yes they can, but it is up to a vet to decide dosage, based on weight and physical condition. Dogs are very different than humans so you can't use your own ampicillan and base your dog's dosage on human weights. You could make things worse.

Never give medication without the advice of your vet. You may not get the dose right, or diagnose the right problem. You can potentially make the problem worse and harder to treat when you finally decide to take the dog to the vet.

Misuse of antibiotics leads to "super" bugs, don't contribute to the problem by being lax with antibiotics.
