My 2004 Dodge Caravan caught fire and the engine burned up last week. It had 35,000 miles - still under waranty (3/36). I'm waiting to see what the adjuster says about it, but am worried (I didn't have GAP insurance...) that I may have to pay out of pocket $$$. If I do, should I contact Dodge? Anyone have a similar situation? How did it turn out? Thanks.

Unfortunately, this is the downside of financing a vehicle for longer than three years. You hit a point where you owe more than the vehicle is worth.

Your insurance ought to cover the book value of the Caravan. Hopefully it is enough, or almost enough, to cover the loan.

I would contact the party that financed your vehicle and explain to them what happened, agree to give them the proceeds from your insurance claim, and then see if they'll finance a replacement vehicle for you.

You should contact your Dodge dealer and find out if your warranty will cover the burned up engine. If not, hopefully your insurance claim money will cover the loan.

Good luck.

If it was a mechanical defect, then the warranty will cover all damages. If it was totaled and you did NOT have gap insurance you may have to do some negotiating with Chrysler.

If you have comprehensive insurance, your insurance company will cover you. If you didn't have comprehensive, and only had liability, you are out of luck.

Check NHSTA.gov for any fire related recalls or TSB's.
