I bought a 10 week old Beagle puppy this weekend and she really caught my eye because her coat is different than other Beagles' I've seen. It's mostly white with big brown spots, like a cow. Every other Beagle I've seen is mostly all black and and tan. I bought her at a pet shop and she came with papers saying she is purebred...is there a possibility that she's not? Or is she just unique? Is there any way for me to find out? Thanks!

Are the papers AKC or another registry? If you are in the US and she is not AKC (at least for a beagle), there's a chance she is not purebred. There are some so-called registeries set up by puppy mill breeders that do not require purebred lineage on parents. Puppy mill puppies are often sold from pet shops, so if they are not AKC, I'd be skeptical. If she is AKC registered, she's a purebred.

If nothing else, her markings sound non-standard for the breed. It doesn't mean she's not purebred, but it does mean she is probably not show quality.

Beagles come in several colors not just tri color.
Brown & white is a common color in Beagles...it is not unique nor rare.

Coming from a Pet Store (which is not a good thing since these puppies come from irresponsible breeders) there is always a possibility she isn't purebred even if she has papers.

Your Beagle could very well be purebred. They typically come in 15" and 13". Some smaller 13" Beagles are called "Pocket Beagles", but really there is no such thing. You really should get her checked by a vet. Buying puppies from a petstore is not a good idea. Crate training is a good idea. Good Luck!

Actually, beagles come in a number of different colors. The most common is probably the tri-color (black/tan/white). But they do also come in white with brown spots, like you mentioned. I think they also come in "lemon", which is white with very, very light brown spots, and bi-color tan and black. So your beagle may well be pure bred, because she fits in one of those color schemes. I don't know how to go about finding out. If you have AKC papers for her, then she probably is.

Its possible she is pure breed. You should try looking up the dogs colors and characteristics on an AKC website. I would have your puppy thoroughly examined by a vet too. Puppies that come from pet shops are almost always from puppy mills. Honestly not a great place to purchase a puppy from.

If you bought her from a petshop there is NO way to tell she is really purebred. Papers mean NOTHING. I had a dog who the breeder claimed she was purebred, even had papers, but we later found out she is not purebred. Petstores get their puppies from puppy mills. Where they breed their females over and over until they die. They live their lives in cages 24/7 with BARELY any food or water. Most of these dogs go 'kennel crazy'. It's very sad. Even if the papers claim to she is AKC, CKC or UKC .. (APR is a puppymill registration) .. they can just fraud out their papers.

Next time go to a shelter or find a reputable breeder. You will have a long time of health problems (hopefully you wont) and alot of vet visits. Trust me, before I knew about puppy mills I bought my dog from a petstore and he has LOADS of problems.

There is NO way to find out unless you find out the name of the 'breeder' on the dogs papers. It will most likely lead you to a puppymill. No REPUTABLE breeder will randomly sell their dogs to a petstore where they DO NOT know where their dog is going to. Let alone have them pay with a credit card.

Hope that helps.

Both color patterns occur - In fact I've seen more mostly white with brown spots than mostly Black & Tan. Guess it's what area you are in.

TO be SURE it's purebred, look at the papers. They should show that it's parents were AKC (American Kennel Club) registered.

If your papers say she is purebread then she probably is.I have seen the kind of dog you have and they are VERY special dogs.If you would like to know for sure if your dog is purebread I would talk to the owner of the petstore. And find out who the owners of your puppy's parents are. Then talk to them.Hope this helped. =)
