In the Catholic faith one has to go through Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA.) After that process you get baptised usually on Easter. For Catholics Baptism is neccesary for salvation and is a sacrament which gives actuall grace. It brings the one baptised into the community of faith and follows Christ's command to his apostles to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Baptizing is not only a Christian ceremony. Baptizing was a way thousands of years ago in many lands as a sign of being part of the community/faith and is so today. That is what Baptizing (immersion) is today for Christians. It symbolizes the person's decision to follow the teachings of Christ (as best they can) and are now a part of the family of God.

Some Christian denominations do baptize. The Catholics sprinkle water on the candidate, as do the Methodists and Presbyterians. Some denominations such as Baptists do actually immerse the person in water. It has no spiritual quality other than to show to the world, your profession of faith. Baptism is a picture of the death, burial, and Resurrection of Christ and a persons acceptance of that concept. No denomination that I know of ,requires baptism in order to be a "born again Christian" Jesus was baptized, totally immersed under water by John the Baptist. Some of us have followed Jesus example.

In Judaism (as was mentioned) immersing in a ritual bath-Mikva is required. Also a committment to keep the commandments. In Judaism, we believe that non-Jews must keep the 7 Noahide laws, but Jews were given 613 (although many only apply when the Temple existed and when it will be rebuilt). Also, male converts need circumcision.

In my religion they are capsized. We hold it at a swimming pool. What happens is the new convert wearing a white robe is lead out into the middle of the pool. The members then all climb in and one at a time tackle the new convert yelling CAPSIZE! That person gets out and the new convert catches their breath. By the time we are done the new convert has been clensed off all impurities from the world.

You don't have to be baptized to be a Christian. But a lot of Christians are baptized because they want to be.

Your statement is not true. To be a Christian means to believe in Christ. Baptism is optional but reccomended, for the thief who died next to Christ, whom Christ took to heaven, was not baptized.
