You DO need to go to the vet. How would you like to have a spot like that on your body and have your parents tell you you don't need to go to the doctor? That's cruel and you should be ashamed of yourself.

You need to get some medication from the Vet, to get rid of the fleas first off. Try and wash the site with warm water no soap. That will make the area burn. Do not put any medication on the tail unless the Vet said to. Leave the area open to dry. The dog will lick the area which is the best medicine.
You really need to get some flea medicine you only have to apply it once a month. The fleas will make the site infected so keep a watch.
Watch the area if it doesn't look better soon you really need to take the dog to the Vet. That dog must have fleas really bad for the dog to bite its own tail. That itching really has to be making your dog miserable. Think of the dogs sake!!!

well if it is this bad you WILL probably need to see a vet. It could be due to mange (a skin mite that can't be treated at home and can spread) or a large flea infestation which could eventually lead to death.

try some oatmeal and tea tree shampoo. wet the neck and place some shampoo on his neck. Make it thick. Then go for the rest of the body. Leave on for 5 minutes.

While you are doing that have someone sprinkle Borax in your carpet and in your yard (if you have a dog that stays outside). This will kill the fleas off the animal. Vacuum up in three days.

Dry well. You may want to buy some Frontline or Advantage and place it on your dog.

EDIT:

You still may want to check with a vet. Do not use flea shampoos or dips. Shampoos may irritate the already damaged skin and dips are extremely poisonous.

If it is fleas this bad then a dip may be needed. The best dips are from vets. Groomers may do a poor job at this.

Frontline will get rid of the fleas if you think it is that.

About that big deep hole... you need to keep that clean and perhaps the dog should be on antibotics, the right kind can only be determined by a vet looking at the wound. Good luck in finding a store that will sell them to you without a vet prescription.

Is there a reason why the vet is a bad option? If it is due to financial reasons they do have payment plans for that...

My german shepard had a nearly identical problem his whole life. The vet told us it was a cyst-- harmless but non-treatable (if your dog has the same problem, you'll notice a hard wart-like bump on his tail). If it's just a hole, keep reading...

If you don't feel the need to see a vet, you should start with a good, long flea and tick bath (please make sure you're thorough, even if the dog doesn't like baths) and since that's only a temporary solution, get him Frontline to keep the fleas and lice away, because they'll head straight for his injury. If he's out-door, provide him with cedar bedding, which repells fleas.

Now your main concern is his tail-- keep it clean! You can use alchohol, iodine, pyroxyl, etc and pour it over the wound (expect him to flinch from the stinging). Ointments probably aren't a good idea because they're supposed to stay on the injury, not just rinse, and he WILL lick off even the worst-tasting creams.

A note on toxicity-- many external/ topical human-care products are also safe to apply to dogs but remember that he's going to keep licking, so pay attention to how MUCH you put on, or how much will be available for him to lick.

I'd suggest not wrapping it if it's just oozy, because the tape will irritate him and if a scab starts to form with the wrap, he'll keep tearing it off and healing will take a lot longer.

As long as he's eating and behaving normally, keep sanitizing his tail with one of the aformentioned items (also stop by a pets store and see if they have any doggie-medical products). If he starts acting sickly though, be sure to take him to a vet!

Also, don't use Hartz products-- they're cheap and don't work very well.

You do need to go to the vet. He can get infection from this huge deep hole in his tail that you described. and you said it was bleeding and from fleas. are you really that uncaring? If it is from fleas you need to start using a real flea product from the vet to prevent this from happening and if you say you can't afford it, take your dog to a shelter and give him up to someone who can look after him properly. You are guilty of animal cruelty if you can't take care of your dog and you should not keep it.

Well if it is fleas, I would use ProSpot. You can get it from your vet or on-line at Pedmeds.com.
You are describing a "hot spot" that are caused by a variety of allergens not just fleas. They are quite painful and I really think it is in your dogs best interest to see a vet. If it was your kid wouldn't you take them to the doctor? Your responsibility is the same.

You do need to take the dog the vet.

Even if it's 'because of fleas' you still need to go to the vet because you need veterinary flea treatment. Pet shop stuff is useless, and if it is fleas causing this then your dog has flea allergic dermatitis, which can only be treated with veterinary medication.

Also, your dog has a wound on his tail that could now be infected. At a minimum he will need antibiotics.

It worries me that you think this. Vets exist to provide diagnoses and treatment for illnesses and injuries to your pet - and they spend years in medical school to learn how to do this, because it's NOT something just anyone can do!

It might NOT be fleas! It might be another form of skin infection, which I have seen in dogs who've chewed on their tails!

What more can I say really. Just please take your dog to the vet. And in future, always take your dog if he seems to be ill or injured, because you are not qualified to say what is wrong - and you can only get proper animal medication from a vet.

Good luck, your dog needs it if you have this attitude.

You possible need to go to the vet. Even if you don't think so. The puncture can become infected and then go internal. Puctures(deep wounds) are far more dangerous than scratches. Infection is very possible and likely.

Your vet may need to fully clean the wound and prescribe antibiotics. Which IMO is far less costly that amputating the tail do to infection.

If it's because of fleas and you've already treated that, you need some sort of antibiotic. That happened to my pet and the vet gave her a shot of an antibiotic that helped. I would recommend going to a vet.

What if it isn't fleas?? What if it is something like Mange?? What if it's an allergy,, What if it's hot spots,
what if it's some kind of fungus... What if you need an antibiotic for the infection? And you treat merely for fleas..
You have wasted your money and time and you dog is no better off.. Might even be worse.. Get the correct diagnosis before you treat.
