This is becoming a more popular trend - it makes the music much more personal and it gets rid of some half baked DJ trying to lead people in the Chicken Dance. Provided the sound system that it is going to be put through is quality and they have someone ready to act as a standby "techie" if needed, I think it's a great idea. Really all the DJ does is announce the different wedding party dances and a friend could help out with that easily - and again - much more personal.

(1) Technically, playing music at a public function (even if it's your own) may constitute a copyright infringement, because when you purchase music you do so for the private, noncommercial use. Your venue may have a music license, but then again it may not. This is probably secondary, since it's unlikely anyone from ASCAP or BMI will be policing your playlists at your wedding.
(2) (Good) DJs are good at reading the crowd, quickly reacting, acting as an MC for the reception (knowing when each event should take place), and adapting so that everyone has a good time. The iPod DJ doesn't do that... people aren't experienced, the music will likely not easily flow from one song to another, and there's little backup if the equipment fails or your guests don't like what's being played.
But
(3) I have heard of many people doing this recently, so I would call it a "minority trend." I, personally, think it would be a disaster without a well-qualified person running it and paying attention to what was going on (unless it's just for background music say at a cocktail hour), but it certainly would be a way to cut costs significantly (especially if you and your fiance are music afficionados and are very jealous over what is played at your reception.)

You can have an iPod and DJ, but you cant remove the DJ entirely. I suggest not only making playlists, but having other backup tunes on there just in case people arent into whats being played. A friend can act as a DJ if he can gauge what the guests are into and adjust accordingly. Also, depending on how large the reception is, it is actually helpful to have someone announcing the key events- people like to know whats going on, if the room is large they may miss some of the action.
In short, you shouldnt just make a playlist and then let it play!

A lot of people are doing this nowadays. Many people don't want to pay a ton of money for a corny DJ, or their music tastes are too specific to let someone else handle their reception playlist.
You may want to suggest to your brother that he use a laptop and iTunes, instead of an iPod. Playlists are easier to manage on laptops, and the pause in between songs is pretty much non-existant (as opposed to the pause with an iPod).
If you do a Google search or check out the link I provided, there are a lot of news articles and tips out there for an iPod wedding.

This is what we are doing as we are having a very small and informal wedding with just 35 guests, and our reception venue is my sister in law's house and garden, so it is convenient for us to do that, we can choose our music before the day, my brother in law will set up a play list and it won't cost us anything.

I am doing this- and am really excited about it. My fiance and I are music lovers and also he is Mexican- so it's important to have some music that his family will really enjoy. We are choosing all of the music and hooking up the Ipod to a speaker system we have rented. It will be programmed for a first dance, farhter-daughter, and all that great stuff. I also personally think MCs and djs can be a bit tacky- and we can't afford a great band.

Trend? Doubt it. Sounds like a cheap way to get music involved in a reception. There are some couples who cant afford a traditional wedding but want to do something similar. Using your own Ipod is cheaper than hiring a dj. I got married before the ipod and we used mixed tapes/cds for our music at the reception.

Yes, it is!!! You're wedding will be filled with music thats with what you want. You can make a playlist just for the wedding. We used a boise system in a large ballroom and it was GREAT!!! And it was so cheap! Greatest idea!

That's what we did for our wedding and it worked a treat !
We had a great time, we got lots of our guests to give us their play lists so we have a huge variety of choices, it was fab, and meant we didn't have the hassle and expense of a DJ,
Have a great wedding - Enjoy !

Hi! You'd be surprised how new of a trend this is becoming. It allows the couple to literally have every type of music they want available right at their finger tips!
