You would be able to find the 1870 US Federal Census which would include Lousiana at either Ancestry.com or HeritageQuest (often in public libraries). Both sites require that you pay so you may want to find someone who can do the looking up for you for starters.

You could also try the Louisana GenWeb site which is part of a worldwide organization of free genealogy sites , I've put its url in the sources box. A quick look didn't indicate any direct census records that could be accessed but there may well be other material that would be useful to you. This state site is only the "top" of the search, many of the Parishes will have their own Genweb site which will have more specific material. If you know more details on your grandmother including a town or parish in Louisiana someone might be able to help.

Good luck.

Either your county library or the nearest LDS family history center will have that for you to search, if that's all you need.

It probably isn't! You'd do well to subscribe to ancestry.com at least for its every-person indexed census, search template, and search wild cards.

Most States subscribe to HeritageQuest Online and your librarian in that case can give you a FREE login and password that allows you at-home online access to most censuses including the 1870. However it's indexed head of household only and absolutely literal - guess the spelling used on your own. In other words you'd already need to know your grandmother's father's name to find her 1870 on that one. *Some states either don't subscribe or charge patrons to use HeritageQuest - budget problems no doubt.

Call your local library and see if they subscribe to heritagequest.com. If they do and you have a valid library card you can access at home from the library's homepage.
