It's all in how you scan, and what you are scanning.
If you are scanning photo's or images that are to be used only for email and viewing on a computer screen, then scan at 72dpi. You may still need to size the scan down using a program such as irfanview. An image size of 480x640 will be more than sufficient in most cases, and will take up little disk space, esp. if set on medium or low quality when resized.

If the scans will be printed, then images should be scanned at 150, but the files will be large. Quality will not be photo quality when printed, but adequate for most basic business and personal needs. For good quality images, scan at 300 dpi.

Tex documents should be scanned at 150 dpi, and your scanner may have an automatic setting for this, to scan for a certain paper size. Consult the user manual.
