I have a student that wants to be more and do more with his life. I'm wondering what organizations work well or have had good results working with these kinds of young people.

It has to be something he really wants to do, for me "an ex-gangbanger" I changed schools and told my "friends" that i was moving out of state. I did nothing for about 2 years no parties no talking to any old friends no answering the phone. It was very hard but gangs don't just let you walk away. After about 2 years of just focus and getting my life together I started going out but I made sure I wasn't hanging out in places where I might run into old "friends".
Its been about 7 years now I have a great career, great friends and most Important I'm not dead or in jail so for me it was worth being alone for awhile. Plus with all that alone time I really thought about the kind of person I wanted to be and I have to say I'm very happy with my life. The best thing I can say is talk to your local gang unit they will have a lot of info for you. Also talk to local Church's they usually have really good programs to help with the transition from that life to one that is more productive

PS: as far as "very few teens change" that is a stupid attitude, and that's the kinda parents that have the little gang banger kids and just let it go because "they wont change there is nothing I can do " it's pathetic to think that way.

He has to options move to a new city/state/county, or he could be arrested other than that he has no real way out, he may get jumped out which is even worse and longer then when he was jumped in because he knows a few of the gangs secrets.

I don't kow a lot about gangs, so i would suggest that you talk to the police gang unit, I am sure they have suggestions. Can you leave that gang? If not, maybe a change of location and new life!

I would suggest the move town, and if necessary to the opposite end of the country- a new life away from the old temptations.

The first thing that must happen is that the gang members must want to get out. You cannot help anyone who refuses help.

Ask for a social worker to help assist you. But most of all, show your loyalty to your student friend. He/she will realize that there are people out in this world, that still believe in them . Formost, never give him/her doubts to loose faith in human kind. Speaking from experience with working with youth from impoverished neighborhoods.

Move and get a new life.

They won't track him down, but if they see him he's surely going to be put into the hospital or killed.

Be carefull. If you reach out to him, he may just cut your arm off. Very few teens change.
