I have thick, shoulder-length hair. Got any tips on how to (successfully) do a messy bun?

ok, well this is how i do my messy buns: First the night before, i curl my hair. (put some hairspray on it but not much) then, the next morning, it should look a little flattened than it did the night before. Now, you are ready to make a SUPER DUPER PERFECT messy bun....i suppose. lol. ne wayz, after you put ur hair up it should look nice, and to make it more messy, shake your hair before you put it in a bun. :D. Good luck...have FUNN! lolzz

What I do is this: A) i. put hair into a ponytail but the last time you pull the hair through, just pull it half way so its in a loop bun ii. take random sections of hair from the bun and shove it in different spots of the elastic around the bun iii. take the bun and kind of dishevel it with your hand just to make it more messy (This usually takes me about 30 seconds- 2 minutes, depending on if im having a bad hair day or not) B) i. put hair into a regular ponytail ii. take a small section of hair (of about 1 inch thickness) and twist is around and around until it curls up on its own. DO this with one hand and once it is twisted hold it with the other. iii. keep doing this with all the sections of the rest of your ponytail. when you are done, take an elastic and wrap it around the bun so it won't fall out. iv. put some bobby-pins in the places where you think it is falling out and voila! (This usually takes me about 2-5 minutes) Good luck ♥

dont make a perfect "pickup". when you pick your hair up to put it in the bun, do it really messily. If there is a small bump, then that is good! Also, you can get an inexpensive hair piece, and adding some of that extra hair really helps! i do it all the time!!

I have used those "Monkey Finger" things, and they work OK.
I have also just used two big barretts---gather hair in halves and pin up with a barrett on each side. You can use fancy ones for going out. Use hair spray, gel, or pomade to messy it up. If your hair is curly, I like "Molding Mud".
