I have a girlfriend that has been in the united states for about 12 years. She says that she is a political excile and that she has a permit to work here, but is not a citizen. She said that since the war in her country (el salvador) is over, they want to make her go back. What are the first steps to take in order to get her green card?

There were conditions when she was accepted as a political refugee. That is the first place to look before doing anything. she could have gotten her green card long ago but did not. Why are you more interested than her? Since she is your gf why don't you just marry her instead?**

Check and see is she qualifies for NACARA see link below. It sounds like she filed for Asylum. If that the case once she get a decision on her asylum she has 60 days to file for "late initial registration" for TPS under El Salvador that came out in 2001. Look into that too. So she might not be deportable, so long as she qualifies for either benefits.

She will more than likely still be deported. However, once she's back in El Salvador, she can go up to the US Embassy and ask for naturalized citizenship.

Or, you can go to your local Social Security administration office and find out some more information.

Apply for a gainful employment and establish the residency status in the US. Good records will speak for itself in the INS. Later, apply for a greencard and eventually for citizenship.
