man has always been trying to make things multipurpose? the idea for some reason is just more appealing than something that only does one thing. you only need to watch infomercials at 2am to realize this. do you suppose this was originally what gave birth to the idea of the mono-theistic god? think about it. before this you had different gods responsible for all sorts of things. you had one god who was responsible for the rain, one who was responsible for the ocean, another one for thunder, another one who made the crops grow. wasn't only a matter of time before someone came along and said, "THROW ALL YOUR OTHER GODS AWAY!!! TODAY WE'RE GONNA TELL YOU ABOUT AN AMAZING ALL IN ONE GOD!!! AND IF YOU ACT NOW WE'LL THROW IN A BOOK ON ALL OF HIS TEACHINGS FOR THE AMAZINGLY LOW PRICE OF AN ENTIRE LIFE OF SERVITUDE AND OBEDIENCE!!!"

Lol, Just_Curious, that is a neat idea...!

Personally, I don't think that the concept of one God came out of a human desire to simplify, like the Magic Bullet did (which looks realllly cool on the infomercials, if you've ever seen it!). Everything-in-one is definitely appealing, such as with the Magic Bullet, but with God...

I like to believe that monotheism reflects our awareness of everything being connected, while the idea of multiple gods reflects our need to understand and to trace/attribute all things to a source or cause, as well as our sense of various forces acting in the world/universe (this could also be said of God in general, but with one God, it is everything from the same source and same force).

But there is actually an interesting theory about where monotheism as a religion/movement first came from. It is that Akhenaten, an Egyptian ruler who isolated his kingdom and began the worship of a single sun god, was the first monotheist, who might have been Moses (strange, I know!). It's worth taking a look at!

Anyway, thanks for sharing your question with us, it is an amusing idea! Overall, I definitely think monotheism has its origin in some part of human nature.

It's an interesting theory but there is a major flaw.

Man did not invent the idea of a mono-theistic God.

God existed before men.
