If you are a battered woman looking for answers on how to deal with this situation, I recommend the book "Refuge: A Pathway Out of Domestic Violence & Abuse" (paperback ISBN 1-56309-811-3) written by Detective Sgt. Donald Stewart who has 25 years experience working with domestic violence cases.

It is written from a practical Christian viewpoint and has chapters such as "Understanding Your Worth As A Woman" and "Jesus, Victor Over Violence" as well as "Escaping the Wrath of Your Abuser" and "Ministering to the Abused: Instructions to Pastors and Those Who Counsel."

It also gives profiles of the abused, the abuser, and talks about the effects of domestic violence on children. There is also a chapter entitled "Our Judicial System: What You Need to Know and Expect."

This book is also useful for people who are not involved in such a situation themselves but know some one else who is or are doing research on this topic for academic reasons.

Whatever your reasons for your question, please know that God loves you unconditionally! God bless you!

The Bible is silent on the issue of marital abuse as a reason for divorce, although it is obvious that God despises the mistreatment of wives by their husbands (Colossians 3:19, 1 Peter 3:7, Ephesians 5:25-33). Abuse should not be tolerated by anyone. No one should have to live in an abusive environment, whether it be from a family member, friend, employer, caregiver, or stranger. Physical abuse is against the law, and the authorities should be the first ones contacted if this occurs.

Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.
Luke 6:21
Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.
1 Corinthians 7:15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.

Colossions 3:19-"Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly."
Paul declared that women "ought to submit", yet he commanded husbands to love their wives and NEVER treat them harshly.

1 Peter 3:7-"Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman as the weaker sex, since they too are also heirs of the gracious gift of life--so that nothing may hinder your prayers."
The Greek work translated as "weaker sex" here is actually "vessel", a physical container. Husbands are specifically reminded to honor women in the context of them being weaker physically. If they do not honor their wives, their prayers will be hindered. In others words, a husband physically dishonoring a wife interferes with the husband's relationship to God.

I'm sure there are passages in the Bible that deal with domestic violence, but they probably say that if you're a man, you can get away with it. It states in the Bible that a man can pretty much have sex with his wife whenever he wants as long as she doesn't have her period. Check out www.ffrf.org and take the quiz! Here is a good start

“In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat her with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. If you don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not be heard” (1 Peter 3:7).

Husbands are to love their wives as they do their own bodies. “No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body, which is the church” (Ephesians 5:29). Men are to be servant leaders, not demanding authority or submission, but treating their wives in a way that submission becomes her natural response. “For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).

And about children.......

“And now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

Colossians 3:21 says, “Fathers, don't aggravate your children. If you do, they will become discouraged and quit trying.” We should do nothing to destroy the spirit of our children, or destroy their innocence. Jesus strongly warns those who might cause children to stumble, or lose faith in Him (Matthew 18:6).

First letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The chapter that starts "Wives, submit to your husbands..."keep reading past the point of things that wives are supposed to do.. and you'll see the long list of what men are supposed to do. To honor them, cherish them, treat their bodies as your own....

Same letter, Ch. 13.. "Love is patient, Love is kind..."

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

1 Corinthians 7:4.

The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.

Mark 12:31
31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]There is no commandment greater than these."
